Call For Papers

We invite 30 Minute Papers for a peer reviewed conference (and subsequent publication) that addresses current issues in teaching painting. Manchester School of Art
14th Oct 2015

Teaching painting in art schools and academies has undergone several significant changes. As the barriers between media were eroded into increasingly fluid borders, art schools have responded by adapting and evolving. Many painting departments have been absorbed into general fine art courses but specialist painting courses and pathways still continue to be developed. How have these courses defined and redefined themselves to reflect the current artistic landscape, and how can painting maintain an identity within a general fine art course? With the definition of painting becoming increasingly porous, how is it being currently taught?

This conference will address the historical, theoretical, pedagogical and continually shifting methods of teaching painting. It will ask how and why our approaches to teaching painting have been developed and offer a platform through which practices and experience can be shared.

We invite the submission of proposals for 30-minute papers that engage with issues reflecting a broad range of teaching practices in undergraduate painting.
Topics may include but are not limited to:

- Innovations in teaching painting
- Historical Lineages of teaching painting
- Teaching the ‘expanded field’ of painting
- Approaches to teaching contextual studies to undergraduate Painting students - International perspectives
- Using Painting Research to Inform Teaching – embedding research in the curriculum
- Teaching painters on general fine art courses
- Teaching painting in a unitized modularized education system

Please send 250 word proposals along with a short biography to Magnus Quaife : m.quaife@mmu.ac.uk
