This project was started at Federal Technological University of Parana, Brazil, in a research group in Art and Technology, Prof. Dr. Luciana Silveira being the main facilitator. It is a multidisciplinary group of master, doctoral and post-doc candidates, the main areas being: photography, cinema, theater and plastic arts.

In March 2014 Dago Schelin showed the group his latest short film, LOVESICK. After watching the film, each group member had a different insight. The meeting ended with the realization that many “views” are possible. Long story short: as this year’s project, the group will write a book on Lovesick. Each author will write about the film Lovesick using his/her scientific “glasses”.

As of now, there are more researchers from other universities also taking part in the project, some even beyond the audiovisual area (for instance, physics and law). The book will most likely be published by Editora Prismas. The working title: Cinema Invites Other Gazes: analysing a short film from different scientific angles.

What does LOVESICK tell you?

There is a vast number of approaches to analyze a film, the most common being made with foundations and theories of cinema. A typical analysis would mention names such as Eisenstein, Arnheim, Balázs and schools such as Hollywood and Auteur, as well as psycho-analytical lines following Lacan and Deleuze. This universe, though immense, could expand even more, after all, cinema is about everything. After all the theory, a film is still a great canvas waiting to be filled and inviting all kinds of views. What “other” areas intersect with cinema? What do they have to say?

General Information & Important Dates

Abstracts of no more than 300 words should be submitted via the contact page by November 30, 2014.
All abstracts will be reviewed, and authors will be notified of the decision of the reviewers by November 30, 2014.
Selected papers will be published in an edited volume.
Papers should be at most 10 pages, including title, abstract, figures and references.
