Burgas is the fourth-largest city in Bulgaria and the second largest city on the Bulgarian Black Sea Coast, on the eastern border of the European Union. The city is an important centre for seaside, cultural, and balneological tourism. Nearby lies the 3,000-year-old ancient city of Nessebar, one of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Bulgaria, famous for the multiple medieval churches and authentic atmosphere. In the suburbs of Burgas is Aquae Calidae–Thermopolis, a thermal spa complex, renowned since Thracian and Roman times for its healing mineral springs and today preserved as an archaeological and cultural site open to visitors. Ancient history combines with rich local biodiversity, as Burgas lies on the Via Pontica, one of the main European migratory bird flyways. A regularly operating ship connects Burgas with Saint Anastasia, the only inhabited Bulgarian Black Sea island, which offers visitors a museum, a church with an icon exhibition, a restaurant, and a perfect view of the city and the sea. With its cozy old-town architecture, wonderful restaurants and museums, a rich cultural calendar, and a long beach strip, Burgas is a favoured destination for both locals and international visitors. |
