--------
Overview
--------

A fundamental property of the power grid is that energy generation and consumption must be equal at all times, and managing this balance is an enormous challenge for power utilities. An energy deficit can lead to service disruptions, on the other hand, a surplus of energy places heavy stress on the grid, potentially causing major blackouts. Exacerbating this grid imbalance problem is the integration of intermittent renewable energy sources. For instance, power utilities face complications when output from wind or solar farms rapidly increases or decreases, because the consumers' demand does not change accordingly. Managing these complications can be costly and wasteful.

A practical approach toward better managing the power system may be to find ways to control or incentivize consumer demand during certain periods through dynamically changing energy costs based on supply. This demand response is a key concept in the vision for the Smart Grid. A grid-friendly approach to power management can potentially reduce the cost of integrating renewable power sources as well as lower the broader environmental impact.
