Overview
The World Health Organization defines “health” as “a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity”. Individual well-being and life satisfaction are affected not only by somatic and psychological elements but also by social factors such as work performance and satisfaction, social
support, neighborhood environment, financial conditions and social cohesion. The enhanced sensing capabilities of today in devices of specialized (physiological sensing products such as BodyBugg) or general (smartphones with sensing and communication capabilities) use allows us to gain novel behavioral insights and utilize them to create new interventions for health promotion and management through persuasive feedback. In this one-day workshop, we endeavor to bring together researchers addressing the problems in this novel research space in thought-provoking ways to answer questions such as:
- How can we use behavioral data gathered from users through various sensing mechanisms to gather insights regarding health outcomes and create awareness for health promotion?
- How can we use sensing devices and related web-based and device-based interfaces to persuade behavior change?
- How can we leverage information about a user’s social graph to improve interactions and foster social engagement?
- How can we crowdsource knowledge from a community and leverage it to improve social and environmental conditions?
- How can we use sensing capabilities to provide context-sensitive just-in-time feedback for improved decision-making?

The topics of interest include (but are not limited to) applications to health, wellness and social engagement in
these areas:
Persuasive Technology, Behavioral Modeling, Socially Aware Computation, Decision Support, Collective Social Intelligence, Self Quantification, Personal Sensing, Mobile Computing, Social Influence & Support, Context-Sensitive Education, Intervention Design, Life Building

Paper Submission
Authors are invited to submit original, unpublished research papers, limited to 6 (IEEE style) pages, and not being considered at another forum. Please follow the IEEE conference paper format (8.5'' x 11'', two-columns). Submission should include the title, author(s), affiliation(s), e-mail address(es), abstract, and postal address(es)
on the first page. Electronic submission of manuscripts (in PDF format) is required. Please submit your manuscript to health-socialcom10@media.mit.edu by the deadline. Submitted papers will be peer-reviewed and evaluated based on their relevance to the Workshop, novelty and scientific contribution. Once a paper has been accepted,
at least one author is required to attend the workshop and present the paper. We look forward to your submission and participation to the workshop and the main conference.
