Call For Papers

The 21st International Conference
on Algorithmic Learning Theory
Canberra, Australia
6-8 October 2010

The 21st International Conference on Algorithmic Learning Theory (ALT
2010) will be held in Canberra, during 6-8 October 2010. The
conference is on the theoretical foundations of machine learning. The
conference will be co-located with the 13th International Conference
on Discovery Science (DS 2010) and after the Machine Learning Summer
School to be held at the Australian National University.

Topics of Interest: We invite submissions that make a wide variety of
contributions to the theory of learning, including the following:

1. Inductive inference
1.1. Universal prediction
1.2. Teaching models related to inductive inference
2. Grammatical inference and languages
3. Inductive logic programming
4. Query Learning
4.1. Learning and complexity theory
4.2. Teaching models related to query learning
5. On-line learning and relative loss bounds
6. Semisupervised and unsupervised learning (including clustering)
7. Active learning
8. Statistical learning
8.1. Support Vector Machines
8.2. VC dimension
8.3. PAC theory
9. Bayesian and causal networks
10. Boosting and bagging
11. Information-based methods
11.1. Minimum description length
11.2. Kolmogorov complexity
12. Latent variable estimation
13. Kernels
14. Graph learning
15. Decision tree methods
16. Markov decision processes
17. Reinforcement learning
18. Real-world applications of algorithmic learning theory
19. Novel approaches to learning theory (not any of the above)

Invited talks. Alexander Clark (Royal Holloway, University of London,
Great Britain) and Manfred K. Warmuth (UC Santa Cruz, USA) will give
invited plenary presentations at ALT 2010; furthermore, Peter L.
Bartlett
(UC Berkeley, USA) will be a joint invited speaker of both
conferences,
ALT 2010 and DS 2010.

Submission. Authors can submit their papers electronically via our
submission page. Files in Postscript (PS) and Portable Document Format
(PDF) are allowed.

Important Dates.

* Submission deadline: 12 May 2010 23.59 hrs GMT .
* Notification of acceptance or rejection will be emailed to the
submitting author by 17 June 2010.
* The camera-ready copy of accepted papers will be due 05 July 2010.

Format. The submitted paper should be no longer than 15 pages in the
standard format for Springer-Verlag's Lecture Notes in Artificial
Intelligence series. The 15 page limit includes title, abstract,
acknowledgements, references, illustrations and any other parts of the
paper; appendixes bypassing the page limit are not allowed. Each
submission must contain one or two keywords from the above list of
topics describing the content.

Policy. Each submitted paper will be reviewed by the members of the
program committee and be judged on clarity, significance and
originality. Joint submissions to other conferences with published
proceedings are not allowed. Papers that have appeared in journals or
other conferences are not appropriate for ALT 2010.

Proceedings. All accepted papers will be published as a volume in the
Lecture Notes in Artificial Intelligence, Springer-Verlag, and will be
available at the conference. Full versions of selected papers of ALT
2010 will be invited to a special issue of the journal Theoretical
Computer Science.

E.M. Gold Award. One scholarship of 555 EUR will be awarded to a
student author of an excellent paper (please mark student submissions
on the title page).
