Call for Chapter Proposals: Women in Pop Culture in Canada
Women’s Press / Canadian Scholar Trans women, two spirit, and non-binary scholars are invited to submit chapter proposals on queer and trans women in popular culture in Canada for an upcoming volume on women in popular culture in Canada to be published by Women’s Press/Canadian Scholars. Here, pop culture is broadly conceived to include discussions of film, television, music, and live performance, as well as political events, social media, fandom, and activism in Canada. Chapters should take an intersectional approach to analysis - considering the intersections of settler colonialism, racism, ableism, and transgender representations. This volume is not only a way to celebrate women’s work in this country, but also to create an alternative archive and “canon” of Canadian culture. With this in mind, we invite chapter proposals for timely, critical, and interdisciplinary accounts of queer and trans women in popular culture in Canada. We are currently only looking for chapters that specifically address transgender representation. With this in mind, possible areas for submission include: Trans and gender non-conforming characters in Canadian media Queering a “Canadian canon" through gender representations QTBIPOC women and (in)visibility in popular culture in Canada Disability and accessibility in media development and reception American or international depictions of Canadian trans women in media Transwomen’s activism in Canada Transwomen in web-series, YouTube, Instagram, or other forms of social media in Canada The editor, Dr. Laine Zisman Newman, welcomes individual and co-authored proposals and chapters from both established and emerging scholars. The intended audience are undergraduate humanities and social science students in Canadian universities and colleges. Abstracts are due no later than December 31, 2018. Please feel free to forward this call to anyone who may be interested. Chapter proposals should be sent to Dr. Laine Zisman Newman at laineyale@gmail.com. |
