Call for abstracts - W-PSDS 2018
Workshop on Planetary-Scale Distributed Systems

October 2, 2018
Salvador, Brazil

http://www.reveillere.fr/wpsds/

A Workshop of IEEE SRDS 2018
37th IEEE International Symposium on Reliable Distributed Systems

http://www.lasid.ufba.br/srds2018/

==== TOPICS ====

Distributed systems have pervaded our daily life, and are now interconnecting
users at a planetary scale. As a consequence, users expect from these systems
multiple key properties at once, such as robustness, availability, safety, and
efficiency. It is particularly challenging to build systems that provide all
these properties simultaneously. A strong community research effort is
necessary to make significant advances towards planetary-scale distributed
services.

The aim of the W-PSDS workshop is to bring together researchers and
practitioners from the large-scale distributed systems community. The goal is
to discuss about the current state of the art, emerging challenges and trends,
as well as novel solutions, implementation and deployment of large scale, and
in particular of planetary-scale or geo-distributed scale systems and
applications.

The workshop will be organized to favor interactions between participants,
feedback from the attendees on presented work and ideas, and networking between
members of the large-scale and dependability communities.

Topics of interest include, but are not limited to, the following:

- Novel storage organizations for large scale systems
- Consistency, reliability, and fault models for large scale distributed systems
- Data recovery: online and disaster recovery
- System assumptions for dependability and performance
- Scaling-out and elasticity with large number of nodes
- Robust and efficient protocols for unstructured overlay networks
- Adaptation and interoperability for large-scale systems
- Peer-to-Peer systems, protocols, and applications
- Large-scale infrastructure technologies (locking, group membership services)
- Evolution of Cloud to Fog/Edge computing
- Machine learning and large scale distributed systems
- Security and privacy for planetary-scale distributed systems

==== WORKSHOP FORMAT ====

W-PSDS 2018 is a workshop without formal proceedings. The goal of the workshop
is to be a forum for the discussion of ideas and interaction between its
participants, including discussion of work in progress, controversial ideas, or
experience reports from past projects, research and industrial efforts. It will
therefore feature interactive talks selected on the basis of short abstracts
but not on full-size papers. All abstracts will be shared with all participants
of W-PSDS and SRDS before the workshop. However, they will not be published
online without the explicit consent of the authors, in order to prevent any
problem with future submissions.

==== IMPORTANT DATES ====

- Abstract submission: July 13, 2018
- Notification to authors: July 27, 2018
- Workshop: October 2, 2018

==== SUBMISSION GUIDELINES ====

Abstracts submission should be made through EasyChair:

https://easychair.org/conferences/?conf=wpsds18

Prospective participants are asked to submit a talk abstract of at most 1 page.
Descriptions of work-in-progress and open questions are particularly
encouraged, as well as reflections on past line of works and experience
reports. Authors are invited to identify a number of open questions (typically
3 to 5) related to their work that caused them special problems or that they
think are relevant to the rest of the community. The program will devote
sufficient time for these questions to be discussed at the workshop.

==== ORGANIZATION COMMITTEE ====

- Yérom-David Bromberg (Université de Rennes, France)
- Laurent Réveillère (Université de Bordeaux, France)
- Etienne Rivière (UCLouvain, Belgium)

The organization committee can be reached through the contact listed on the
easychair submission website.

W-PSDS 2018 is organized and sponsored by the DIONASYS European project funded
by CHIST-ERA (http://www.dionasys.eu).
