About ICON 2018 (Abstract)

We are a group of students of Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz (JGU) who organizes the first annual international students’ conference that will be held at JGU. The conference is open to all university students worldwide. We searched for a topic which resonates with all students, facilitates interdisciplinary discussions, and encompasses existential concerns, as well as current and future challenges. That’s why we decided on “Bounds of Humanity”. Are there bounds for humankind and humanity? What are the limits of responsibility? Can we overcome mental, political, and social boundaries?

Topics (among others)

Digital Media, Digital Media Learning, Disability Studies, Disaster Management, Fertility, Film and Media, Free Will, Freedom, Freedom of Information, Gender, Human Evolution, Human Nature, Human Rights Law, Identity, Immigration

The conference is open to all university students worldwide. It’s our pleasure to invite you to participate in this event. The conference language is English.

What’s the topic?

We searched for a topic which resonates with all students, facilitates interdisciplinary discussions, and encompasses existential concerns, as well as current and future challenges. That’s why we decided on “Bounds of Humanity”. Are there bounds for humankind and humanity? What are the limits of responsibility? Can we overcome mental, political, and social boundaries? Come to Mainz and discuss, among other things: social constructs, bioethics, human rights, and conceptions of humanity.

Topics of interest could be:

- identities (gender, disability, nationality, stereotypes, xenophobia)
- cloning, organ donation, fertility, healthcare systems
- immigration law, refugee policy
- freedom of speech and of the media (and attacks on it)
- the impact of climate change on humanity and vice versa

We will offer a variety of key note sessions, individual and joint talks, and a closing workshop for all participants. Submit your abstract for an individual or joint talk. You worked on a related topic in one of your courses? Let others know about it. Present some of your course work, your B.A./B.Sc./M.A./M.Sc. thesis. Please find our guidelines for authors of abstracts https://icon.uni-mainz.de/guidelines-for-authors/ .
