*Scope
The 1st International Conference on 'What Makes Humans Human?' (WMHH 2010) is organized and hosted by PhD students of Ulm University for PhD students. The conference is an endeavor to integrate interdisciplinary topics and knowledge of all fields on human centered science. The main goal of this event is to form an annual platform to present and discuss studies and research on human traits, their flaws and history, as well as relationships with other humans or artificial human-centered systems.

This call for participation invites all PhD students of the manifold fields of psychology, sociology, computer science, philosophy, mathematics, medicine, biology, art, music, and humor to take part in this unique interdisciplinary event where the future leading minds meet to discuss and celebrate the fascinating subject of 'What Makes Humans Human?'.

The scientific committee and conference organizers are all PhD students from international research institutes contributing on a voluntary basis.

*Topics
Researchers, and students are invited to submit contributions and proposals related (but not limited) to the following topics:
- ethnographic user studies
- user centered design
- human-centered systems
- ethics
- user/behavior modeling
- sustainable lifestyle
- quality of experience
- cognitive systems
- personality
- demographics in the 21st century
- philosophy
- economy
- health
- neuroscience
- human genetics
- molecular biology
- fashion
- entertainment

*Submissions
Submissions can have any of the following forms:
- original papers & position papers (2-4 pages)
- extended abstracts for poster presentations and demos (2 page)
- artistic installations or performances (possibly combined with an extended abstract) are welcome, but need to be registered and coordinated with the organizers.

The language of the conference is English and submissions have to be formatted according to the Springer Lecture Note style ( for instructions please follow the guidelines found at http://www.springer.com/computer/lncs?SGWID=0-164-7-72376-0 ).

*Conference Proceedings
All submissions will be peer-reviewed. Accepted papers are included in the conference proceedings online. Publication within a series of an publisher is being investigated.

*Conference Venue
The city of Ulm (Germany) is well known for its historic downtown with its world famous Muenster, pretty canals leading towards the Danube, and its scenic atmosphere. It was home to great thinkers ahead of their time such as Albert Einstein and Sophie Scholl. Ulm is located in the heart of Swabia and is rich of culinary delicacies. The conference venue is Ulm University and is located on top of a hill surrounded by a beautiful wood, inspiring young and established researchers alike.
