Introduction

Currently there are significant efforts in e-learning to enable anytime, anywhere access to educational material for an increasingly diverse population. Anytime, anywhere access presents challenges in delivering educational content suitable to diverse device types and network conditions. The large diversity in the student population indicates that a one-size-fits-all approach to content delivery may not be suitable, but rather content should be tailored to an individual's learning requirements and preferences.

At the same time, learner's expectations regarding the type and quality of content have risen rapidly in recent times, driven largely by their experience with electronic entertainment. Recently, advancements in device and network-related technologies have triggered users' interest in game-based, multimedia-oriented and/or wireless and mobile education. This interest supports research into innovative educational content delivery and presentation techniques.

There are various mobile terminals (e.g. smartphones, PDA, etc) which differ in terms of data reception, processing and presentation. Wireless networks such as WiFi and 3G enable the anytime, anywhere paradigm. However these networks differ from traditional wired networks and from each other in terms of characteristics such as bandwidth, level of congestion, mobility support and even cost of transmission.

This upcoming edited book aims to bring together researchers and developers from various related areas to share their knowledge and experience, to describe current state of the art in mobile and wireless-based adaptive e-learning and to present innovative techniques and solutions that support a personalized learning process involving media rich content delivered via wireless networks to mobile devices.

Objective of the Book

The main goal of this new publication is to provide innovative and creative ideas for improving the quality of learning and to explore all new Learning-Oriented Technologies, Devices and Networks.

The proposed book will provide a compendium of terms, definitions and explanations of concepts, processes and acronyms. Additionally, this volume will feature chapters (6,000-10,000 words) authored by leading experts offering an in-depth description of key terms and concepts related to different areas, issues and trends in various areas of Learning-Oriented Technologies, Devices and Networks.
