SOCIALSENS 2018 CALL FOR PAPERS

We invite original submissions for SocialSens 2018: the Third International Workshop on Social Sensing (https://www.cse.buffalo.edu/~lusu/SocialSens2018/), held in conjunction with IEEE/ACM IoTDI (http://conferences.computer.org/IoTDI/) on April 17th, 2018, in Orlando, FL. SocialSens 2018 invites researchers and engineers from academia, industry, and government to present recent advances in both theoretical and experimental research on social sensing topics. The field of social sensing aims to bring together the community of researchers who intersect traditional networking, sensing, and CPS topics with social media analysis. It stems from the observation that social networks can be viewed as new types of “sensors” that carry information on what happens in the physical world. There is therefore much benefit from an exchange of ideas between the relevant communities from physical and social backgrounds, including sensing, data fusion/mining, signal processing, social networks, cognitive modeling, computational social and behavior science, and IoT/CPS, among other topics. Social sensing advances the foundations of data collection and processing that exploits social and physical sources. At present, no forum brings those communities together. SocialSens aims to become one such forum.

Topics of interest include:
- Exploitation of social media as sensing sources
- Ubiquitous, mobile and pervasive crowd-sensing,
- Participatory and opportunistic sensing
- Urban/smart city sensing
- Social signal processing
- Information and coding theory for social sensing systems
- Information processing and knowledge discovery from social and sensor data
- Data reliability on social media
- Fake news/source detection and rumor localization in social media
- Privacy, security, and ethics
- CPS/IoT sensing with human-in-the-loop.

Two types of submissions are solicited:
1. Full papers: Maximum length of 6 pages, including title, author list, abstract, all figures, tables, and references. At least one author of each accepted paper must register for the workshop and present the paper.
2. Vision abstracts: This is a 1-page extended abstract that offers a future vision for a research direction the field of social sensing. The abstract should include title, author list, narrative (the vision statement), and references. A graphical illustration would be highly desired (included in the 1-page limit). At least one author of each accepted abstract must register for the workshop and participate in a future visions session. The session will include short talks by author of accepted abstracts, followed by discussion.

Camera ready version: March 1st, 23:59, AoE
Conference: April 17th, 2018

Submission guidelines: Papers may be submitted through the submission website: https://easychair.org/conferences/?conf=socialsens2018. Submitted papers must be original and unpublished, must not be currently under review for any other publication, and need to be written in English. The reviews process is single blind and there is no specific need to anonymise the submissions. All submissions must use the LaTeX (preferred) or Word styles found at https://www.ieee.org/conferences_events/conferences/publishing/templates.html. Papers that do not meet the size and formatting requirements will not be reviewed. For all papers, IEEE reserves the right to exclude the paper from distribution after the conference (e.g., removal from IEEE Xplore) if the paper is not presented at the conference.
