In pursuit of a wider bandwidth and higher communication efficiency, traditional buses are being replaced by innovative communication fabrics as the principal interconnect. However, these interconnection networks consume a significant portion of the total system energy. It has been reported in most systems up to 35% of energy is consumed by the interconnection networks. Thus, we must develop innovative and effective solution that can reduce power consumption for the interconnection networks for high-performance distributed systems.

The special issue will primarily encompass theoretical and practical solutions for energy-efficient communications for high-performance distributed systems. The topics of interest include, but are not limited to
. Voltage and frequency scaled networks
. Energy-efficient communication protocols
. Switching and routing protocols
. Hardware solutions for achieving energy efficiency in large-scale networked systems
. Application specific communication protocols for emerging distributed systems paradigms
. Multi-objective optimization procedures for achieving
high-throughput for energy-efficient systems
. Cross layer protocol design aiming at energy efficient solutions
. Network models and simulation modulestools for energy efficient solutions
. Virtualisation techniques for energy efficiency
. Remote waking up techniques, protocols and strategies
. Energy consumption surveys for network elements
. Holistic models for energy efficient computing
