Panel 12.5 National parties and the EU in a trans-national and pan-European perspective.

This panel focuses on political parties as the main channel of democratic representation both at national and at supranational level. Specifically it points its attention to the development of cooperation and/or coordination among national political parties in two main perspectives: a) trans-national (or horizontal), thus the coordination and cooperation of political parties both in their support and opposition to the integration process across several countries; b) pan-European (or vertical), representing the cooperation and coordination of national parties at the supranational level, thus both in the European Parliament (EP), and within the European Political Parties (i.e. the former supranational party federations).
This phenomenon happens in an environment (the EU) that can be described as unfriendly to both perspectives of evolution for two main reasons: first, the coordination of national parties in both a trans-national and pan-European perspective is hindered by differences in their national and ideological background. Second, the complex cultural and institutional infrastructure of the EU may represent an obstacle to such cooperation (e.g.: the EP as an unfriendly arena especially for those parties opposing the integration project).
This panel welcomes studies that address both the origin and evolution of such transnational and pan-European dynamics of cooperation and coordination. Particular attention will be given to works that seek to understand both qualitatively and quantitatively what drives such dynamics as well as research seeking to understand how do such cooperation and coordination evolve together with the multiple challenges that the EU is facing (e.g.: refugee and immigration crisis) and the consequent differentiated effects that such challenges have across member states. Furthermore, attention will be given to works seeking to understand potential future developments of these dynamics. This panel accepts contributions written both in Italian and in English.
