‘It is more important to know what sort of person has a disease, than to know what sort of disease a person has’ – Hippocrates.
Personalized medicine is a medical approach that involves tailoring the medical decisions and treatment regimes according to each patient’s unique genetic makeup. Effective application of the method lies in a better understanding of a person's distinctive molecular and genetic attributes, which can categorize them in a risk group for certain diseases. Personalized medicine may lead to choosing the most potent and safest treatment strategies for each patient. Personalized medicine may be considered an extension to routine medical practices in disease treatment. Besides, enabling the physicians to decide a more potent treatment with fewer repercussions, the concept of personalized medicine has the potential to lower overall healthcare costs through early detection and prevention. Personalized medicine is plausible to be revolutionary in disease prediction, prevention, diagnosis, treatment and monitoring. It has already showed its worth in both clinical research and patient care, and it may get even more valuable with further advancements in scientific knowledge and technology.
