CALL FOR PAPERS: First International Workshop on the Social and Organization Dimensions of Software Architecting - SODA 2017

April 4, 2017
Gothenburg, Sweden
https://sites.google.com/site/1stsoda2017/

Workshop held in conjunction with the IEEE International Conference on Software Architecture (ICSA) 2017
http://icsa-conferences.org/2017/

THEME AND GOAL
Software architecting is about making decisions that have system-wide impact and that shape software product and process alike. While researchers and practitioners have tried to define and scope the role of the architect, social and organizational impacts on the architect and the architecting process are often neglected. The social aspects and the role of different players in the software development process have been previously examined within the broader context of software engineering (e.g., the CHASE and CSD workshop series at ICSE). The SODA workshop on the other hand focuses on the social and organizational dimensions in which architects produce their outputs. Also, in contrast to other venues, SODA focuses on the architect in the surrounding organization, and the process rather than on the architecture as the output of the architecting process. SODA aims at offering a venue for researchers, practitioners and educators within the software architecture domain to jointly discuss experiences, forge new collaborations, and explore innovative solutions in this area. This initial edition of the workshop focuses on two aspects related to the role of the software architect: (1) tasks performed and skills required from architects; (2) the wider social and organizational contexts of the architect.

TOPICS
*Skills of architects, including evidence for their relevance and impact on project success and product quality
*Impact of experience on how architects perform tasks
*Tasks and skills of architects and their relation to tasks and skills of other roles (e.g., developers)
*Role of the architect in highly iterative/incremental development (e.g., continuous delivery, DevOps)
*Personality and personality traits of architects, in particular in their social and organizational context
*Socio-technical and organizational relationships of architects at the crossroads of organization, architecture and social development networks
*Social and organizational pitfalls and conflicts of interests faced by architects (and how to handle them)
*Community smells in organizational context
*Social-technical project cost and social debt
*Job performance of architects, evaluation and assessment of architects and their skills and skill level
*Implications of skills and social/organizational context on tertiary education/professional training and career paths of architects

PAPER CATEGORIES
*Notes, position and vision papers (2-4 pages): Position statements from practitioners; new challenges, emerging trends; novel solutions and inspiring new ideas; on-going research, directions for future research.
*Reference problem papers (2-4 pages): Descriptions or examples of problems in real-life settings that pose fundamental or characteristic challenges.
*Full papers (6-8 pages): Innovative, original research, empirical studies, systematic literature studies, etc.
*Industry and experience papers (2-8 pages): Industrial experience, case studies, challenges, problems and solutions.
*Education and training papers (2-8 pages): Experiences and approaches to teach academic/industry courses (e.g., lesson plans, assignments, tools).

Each submission must clearly include and elaborate on at least one "position" or "argument" - something that the authors feel strongly about in the context of the workshop.

Each paper will be reviewed by three members of the program committee. Papers must present novel material and not under review elsewhere at the time of submission. Accepted papers will be published in the IEEE CS Digital Library and presented as short talks or posters at the workshop.

All papers must conform, at time of submission, to the IEEE Formatting Guidelines (http://www.ieee.org/conferences_events/conferences/publishing/templates.html). Please submit your contribution via the SODA 2017 EasyChair submission page (https://easychair.org/conferences/?conf=soda20170).
