Workshop Scope and Goals

The world is becoming increasingly connected and generating huge volumes of data. The resulting deluge of data to analyze together with the need to simultaneously manage increasing numbers of applications stresses the capabilities of current datacenters (DCs). At the mean time, as cloud computing is now becoming an essential component of IT strategy, and being embraced by the majority of businesses of all sizes. The cloud providers, such as Amazon, Baidu, Google and Microsoft, attempt to expand their service to adapt big data applications. In this new scenario, a wide range of challenges needs to be addressed both at design and run-time. And a set of new trends have emerged, just for example:

• Software-defined computing, which removes intelligence from the hardware and abstract it to a far more standardized software layer has been introduced to cloud platform. Such mechanism not only makes the heterogeneous hardware work more effectively, it also allows the developers to introduce new functionality more easily.

• In order to improve energy-efficiency and performance of cloud and DC workloads, one of several effective approaches is to integrate heterogeneous computing devices (such as FPGAs, Field-Programmable Gate Arrays) into servers, along with conventional CPUs. Moreover, such new first-class computing components is not only used for acceleration in DCs (e.g. Microsoft Catapult project), but also could be provided as a service to public users across the Cloud (e.g. Amazon AWS F1 instance).

This upcoming workshop on Emerging Technologies for software-defined and reconfigurable hardware-accelerated Datacenters in Cloud (ETCD 2017), which will be held in conjunction with ASPLOS’2017, aims to provide a forum for researchers from academia, industry and government research labs to exchange research ideas.
The topics relate to all critical aspects of emerging technologies and advances for datacenter and cloud computing, including architectural support, benchmarks and metrics, data management software, operating systems, and to learn the emerging challenges and opportunities in the future. To encourage discussion between participants, sufficient time slot will be scheduled for interactions between the presenters and the audience.

List of topics

We cordially invite researchers from all institutions to submit their work. Preliminary results of interesting ideas and work-in-progress are welcome. Submissions that are likely to generate vigorous discussion will be favored!
Submissions will be judged based on relevance, significance, originality, correctness and clarity. Submissions should present original research and should provide sufficient background materials to make them accessible to a broader community.
The list of topics of interest for workshop submission includes but is not limited to:

• Processor, memory, network, storage and system architectures support for datacenter and Cloud
• OS, distributed systems, hypervisors, middlewares and system management support for large-scale datacenter and Cloud
• Acceleration system architecture and FPGAs designs for heterogeneous energy-efficient reconfigurable datacenter and Cloud.
• FPGA fabrics for server-system-level, rack-level, and DC-level acceleration.
• Emerging cloud applications, and applications that would benefit from FPGA acceleration e.g., IoT, Demos of users’ case studies and real-world workloads
• On-chip and off-chip interconnects between traditional CPUs and FPGAs, such as coherent links.
• Benchmarks, metrics and workload characterization methods for cloud computing and heterogeneous reconfigurable computing
• Evaluation tools, methodologies and workload synthesis
• Energy efficiency and energy-efficient designs
• Availability, fault tolerance and data recovery in data center and cloud environments
• Scalable system and network designs for high concurrency/bandwidth streaming
• Programming models and language support for reconfigurable
