Call For Papers

In response to a rapidly expanding water crisis, the water industry draws novel ICT directions, which feature the most recent advances in sensing, networking, processing, and control.
In this continuous effort Smart Water Networks (SWN) have an inherited dependence on Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS), since the latter provides the technological suite to deliver reliable, scalable, and secure architectures in highly-adapting environments. Nevertheless, numerous technical and research challenges must be jointly addressed. Front-end raw sensing should be elevated to collaborative edge-processing, which is capable of adapting to the spatial and temporal dynamics of underground and underwater environments. Distributed intelligence and control should be combined with scalable computing architectures to efficiently address the necessity of timely failure detection and isolation. Novel paradigms on security and safety against contamination should be embedded to the network backbone of SWN architecture. High-level data analytics are required to empower end-users, and allow highly-interactive, real-time water resources management. All in all, the existing plethora of highly customized ICT-based water management solutions should be replaced by a science of systems integration, in order to enable the standardized interaction of communication, processing, and control CPS modules that are tailored to the needs of water applications.

The objective of CySWater2017 is to bring together researchers and engineers from the fields of Communications/Networking, Learning/Processing, and Control and practitioners from the Water Industry to both share their experiences, as well as formulate novel CPS paradigms for fulfilling the vision of SWN. Emphasis will be given to theoretical modelling; modern exemplars that respond to different aspects of the water life-cycle; current trends on standardization and CPS integration for water resources optimization.

- Infrastructure & smart sensor devices for SWN

- Signal sampling, classification & anomaly detection for SWN

- Decentralized multi-sensor fusion, learning & data analytics.

CPS-Architectures for smart water networks:

- Underground & underwater CPS

- Networked Control Systems architecture, incl. cloud & distributed computing aspects

- CPS and security for SWN.

Analysis, Performance, & Applications:

- Testbeds, field studies, & performance analysis

- Novel CPS paradigms for modern water management (e.g., treatment/recycle/reuse, wasterwater management).

Emerging topics:

- Smart water standardization policies

- User-empowerment in water systems

- Privacy and water data ownership

- Water-food-energy nexus

- CPS design for extreme water events.
