2001: A Space Odyssey
Representation and Interpretation

Chapters are sought for a proposed edited collection on 2001: A Space Odyssey, with post-graduates and ECRs in particular encouraged to submit.

Kubrick Studies in recent years has come to be dominated by historical approaches, informed largely by the Stanley Kubrick Archive. Though these new methodologies have progressed our understanding of Kubrick’s operations as a film director, it does not resolve the intellectual, formal and aesthetic motivations that underpin his work.

This edited volume seeks to bring to light the impact of the ‘new’ Kubrick studies upon the ‘old’ Kubrick studies and collate together original insights, and textual and interpretative analyses of 2001: A Space Odyssey. By revising the formalist approaches in Kubrick Studies and conflating it with new empirical approaches, we can arrive at a broader understanding of the means and ways in which Kubrick’s methods as a director were developed to create a unique aesthetic creation and a film that changed cinematic language radically.

Abstracts are specifically sought for chapters on:
- Historical context / production histories
- Critical analysis of studies on 2001

Other abstract are welcome in relation to the above proposal, as well as the following suggested topics:
- Authorial agency
- Genre
- Music
- Legacy / Influence
- Post-2001
- Representation / Interpretation
- Interdisciplinary approaches
- Philosophy vs empiricism

Abstracts of 400 words to be submitted to 2001collection@gmail.com along with a 100 word biography by 30 June 2016. Successful authors will be notified by 8 July 2016. First drafts of chapters of 7000 words (including references – Harvard style) will be due by 30 November 2016.
