=============================

Introduction
------------
Rapid developments in computing, networking and communications lead to tremendous advances in multimedia technology, including profound changes in the ways of multimedia access, distribution and consumption. Streaming media is one of the most exciting and active topics with continuing significant progress in the area of multimedia research, where streaming media has been experiencing dramatic growth and stepped into mainstream media communications. In the past decade streaming media has had great success in network broadcasting, distance learning, digital library, and video on demand (VOD) among others. Motivated by its wide-ranging application potential, great efforts have been (and are being) dedicated to the research and development on steaming media to attack technical challenges such as multimedia adaptation, transmission, delivery architecture, security, etc. Thus, there exists a strong need for an edited book that will present and dissect the latest developments of novel architectures, techniques and applications for streaming media as well as current landscape changes, to keep readers abreast of the current research and development trends in the constantly changing area.

Objective of the Book
---------------------
This edited book is intended to be a collection of tutorials, surveys, and original contributions that address the up-to-date research findings in streaming media. The primary objective of this book is to cover state-of-the-art research and developments, practical applications, as well as emerging trends in streaming media. The book aims to acquaint the scholars and practitioners involved in the research and development of streaming media with the most updated reference on a wide range of related topics. The book will also present some promising ideas that could be pursued in further research.

Target Audience
----------------
The target audience of this book would be those interested in various aspects of streaming media. This book is meant to be accessible to audiences including researchers, developers, engineers, and innovators working in the relevant areas. The largest audience will be the academics, industry professionals and researchers who aspire to learn the recent progress and future trends of streaming media. This book can also serve as a solid advanced-level supplement to the courses of media processing and communications for senior undergraduates and postgraduates.
