Introduction
------------
Rapid developments in computing, networking and communications lead to tremendous advances in multimedia technology, including profound changes in the ways of multimedia access, distribution and consumption. Streaming media is one of the most exciting and active topics with continuing significant progress in the area of multimedia research, where streaming media has been experiencing dramatic growth and stepped into mainstream media communications. In the past decade streaming media has had great success in network broadcasting, distance learning, digital library, and video on demand (VOD) among others. Motivated by its wide-ranging application potential, great efforts have been (and are being) dedicated to the research and development on steaming media to attack technical challenges such as multimedia adaptation, transmission, delivery architecture, security, etc. Thus, there exists a strong need for an edited book that will present and dissect the latest developments of novel architectures, techniques and applications for streaming media as well as current landscape changes, to keep readers abreast of the current research and development trends in the constantly changing area.
