Call For Papers

We seek contributions for an edited collection on intersectionality and images of female aggression. This collection uses an intersectional lens to analyze how “aggressive girls” are treated in the media and the criminal justice system. Our hope is that the edited book will be multidisciplinary including authors from criminology, sociology, psychology, gender and women’s studies, and media studies/cultural studies. The book is intended to be a reference for researchers, policymakers, professionals, and students interested in images of female aggression and violence in popular culture.

Chapters in the proposed collection can focus on one or more of the following categories:
● Female aggression/violence and intersectionality. Of particular interest to the editors are popular depictions of female aggression/violence and race, class, and sexuality; the roles of race, ethnicity, class, religion, and heterosexism in definitions of feminine “evil,” and the influence of race, class, gender, and sexuality on representations of indirect vs. direct aggression
● Female aggression/violence in television and film, particularly in reality tv programming, such as the Bachelor, Love & Hip Hop, and the Real Housewives
● Female aggression/violence in social media, particularly cyberbullying and girl-fighting
● Female aggression/violence in crime and justice
● The relationship between intersectional feminism and female aggression/violence
● The alleged link between hormones, emotions, and female aggression/violence
● Women/girls in gangs
● School cliques and bullying

Preference will be given to abstracts received before May 31, 2016 and should be 500-700 words. Please include a brief biographical statement and curriculum vitae.

The proposals must be in English and submitted in PDF format (only one file) to Krista McQueeney at: mcqueeneyk@merrimack.edu.
