Department of French Studies Graduate Student Association Conference
March 11-12, 2016

Violence and Resistance in the French and Francophone World

The goal of this conference will be to address how literary and linguistic development have been impacted by violence and how language and literature have been utilized as tools of resistance against various types of violence. Some questions to consider include:

•In what ways have metaphorical and literal violence been represented in French and Francophone texts?

•Does the history and culture of France and other Francophone countries affect how violence is depicted and discussed?

•How have the tensions between violence and resistance been addressed or resolved through artistic expressions such as films, literature, theatre, media, and cyberspace?

•How has structural violence influenced linguistic development in French and Francophone cultures?

•How has the destabilization or subversion of linguistic dialects proven to be a pivotal tool in combatting violence?

We encourage submissions of papers that address, expand on, and interpret the issues and questions raised here. This may include examining or comparing various genres such as film, music, or performance, as well as literature, both French and Francophone, from any time period. Submissions on linguistics and culture are also highly desired. Papers, in either French or English, should be no more than 20 minutes in length. Please send a 250-word abstract as well as your university affiliation and contact information by December 15, 2015 to:
