Big Data represents a significant increase of characteristics of data on a set of dimensions, usually described as the 5 Vs (Volume, Velocity, Variety, Value and Veracity). While much focus has been given to research and development of new technologies to address the volume aspect, more effort is required for the rest. This workshop aims at providing a venue to discuss efforts from research and industry to tackle the Variety dimension of BigData when it is in motion, such as the case dynamic data from sensors and similar sources.

Variety means that data comes from various domains and sectors (healthcare, e-gov, science, manufacturing, business, etc.), sources (enterprise databases, tweets, social media, etc.), and formats (structured, semi-structured, unstructured). It also means that Big Data can be served over a variety of hardware and software platforms, as well as networking protocols. It can also come in various rates and granularity. Variety also covers the heterogeneity in schema and semantics used to describe data.

Much of Big Data comes from real-time sources which continuously produce data, such as things in the Internet of Things. Many architectures to address Big Data are based on decoupled distributed paradigms, such as stream and event processing systems. Variety has always been a topic of interest in computing. However, Big Data presents unprecedented scales of variety and velocity. Tackling variety in such settings needs to be loosely coupled, reactive, and timely. Thus, the key question becomes: what are the most suitable models to tackle one or more types of variety in Big Data when it is in motion?

Research Topics

The workshop invites papers to discuss a set of key topics which include, but are not limited to:

- New concepts, types, and sources for variety in Big Data
- Models to quantify variety
- Domains for variety in motion such as Internet of Things, smart cities, etc.
- The effect of distribution and decoupling on variety
- The role of standards for handling variety for Big Data in motion
- Top-down and bottom-up semantic models for variety in motion including ontologies, statistical and vector space semantics, etc.
- Benchmarking Big Data variety approaches for real-time systems
- Paradigms for variety in motion including decoupled event processing, search, topic detection, event recognition, etc.
- Architectures for tackling variety leveraging Hadoop, Cassandra, MongoDB, etc.

Proceedings
===================

All papers accepted by the workshop will be included in the IEEE Big Data 2015 conference (http://cci.drexel.edu/bigdata/bigdata2015/) proceedings as well and archived in IEEE Xplore digital library. We are also looking for opportunities to invited extended version of workshop to be published in other journals and book chapters.

Keynote
===================

Professor Kien A. Hua, University of Central Florida, USA, will give a kenote on the NASA's IoT application for spaceport design, based on his project collaboration with NASA.
The keynote will discuss: the impact of video streaming on IoT applications, and possible solutions, ThingStore - Boolean architecture for IoT, A meeting room for IoT, and a spaceport application of ThingStore at NASA.

Papers are accepted through the online submission system. Full papers can be up to 9 pages in length. We also encourage submission of short papers (up to 4 pages) reporting work in progress.
