Call For Papers

Visions of 2025 and Beyond (V2025)

Imagine it is 2025 and you have been asked to propose a research direction for the next five years of your research program. What will the state-of-the-art and state-of-the-practice of software engineering be in 2025? What will be the major problems and challenges then? What will be your visionary ideas for overcoming those problems and challenges?

ICSE 2016 invites submissions to the Visions of 2025 and Beyond (V2025) Track, where the emphasis is on long-term challenges in software engineering research, and ideas for attacking these challenges. We particularly welcome submissions that envision innovative solutions to cross-disciplinary challenges.

To encourage researchers to present truly visionary concepts, we are seeking sponsorship for the track by the Computing Community Consortium. Sponsorship by CCC will allow us to offer prizes (awarded as travel grants) for up to 3 top papers in this special track: first prize $1000, second prize $750, and third prize $500.

In contrast to submissions to the Technical Research Track—which often build on established approaches and recent research results and typically contain significant results of their own—submissions to the V2025 Track will be judged on the articulation of challenges that reach beyond the current state-of-the-art and state-of-the-practice, and on the likelihood that the ideas proposed can address those challenges and define new research directions. Ideally, a V2025 submission will be more than a position statement, and it definitely should not be a “lite” version of a submission for the Technical Research Track. The emphasis is truly on 2025 and beyond, and not on incremental embellishments to existing research programs. Submissions that do not have this character should be submitted to other tracks of ICSE 2016. In particular, please consider submitting extended abstracts describing nearer-term new ideas and emerging results to the ICSE 2016 Poster Track or one of the many ICSE Workshops.

Submissions to the V2025 Track must conform to the formatting guidelines of the Technical Research Track, but are limited to at most FOUR pages in length for both submission and final publication, including all text, references, appendices and figures. Submissions that fail to conform to these requirements will be rejected without review. Papers must be submitted in PDF format through the V2025 Track submission site,

Submissions will be reviewed by at least two members of the V2025 Track Program Committee for originality and innovation in the ideas presented and their underlying intuitions, and for the validity of the argumentation. Papers that are technically sound but incremental with respect to the current the current state-of-the-art or state-of-the-practice are unlikely to be accepted.

Accepted papers will be published in the ICSE 2016 Companion Proceedings and on the Web and in the ACM and IEEE digital libraries, and authors of accepted papers will be invited to present their paper during a session of the main conference. Note that the official publication date of the proceedings is the date the proceedings are made available in the ACM Digital Library. This date may be up to two weeks prior to the first day of the conference. The official publication date affects the deadline for any patent filings related to published work.
