The Internet of People (IoP) has been predicted as the next wave of information and communications technologies. It is estimated that more than 55 billion IoP devices could be sold in 2025.

IoP will rely on a cycle of innovation in cloud computing, broadband networks, big data, and smart lightweight devices but the most challenging research issue is the interaction between physical contexts and objects. This theme issue will examine the state-of-the-art research and future trends in IoP technologies in areas including methodologies, modeling, analysis and newly introduced communication technologies and applications, and address specific themes including computational intelligence for ambient assisted living, human behavior analysis, modeling, and understanding, human activity recognition, and processing of sensor data.

Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:

Human behavior analysis and activity recognition
Context-awareness and human-environment interaction
Affective and social computing for IoP
Nature-inspired intelligence methods
Data Processing and Controlling Networking at the edge
Middleware for heterogeneous sensors, devices &protocols, QoS provisioning
Next generation of open platforms and novel hardware for the IoP in 5G access technology
Network middleware and protocols to facilitate Smart environments
Innovative sensing devices and uses of existing sensors in intelligent systems;
Smart Devices and inter-communication
Management of smart services (discovery, publishing) for IoP
Interconnection of IoP with social network environments
Intelligent and/or wearable sensors
Advances in distributed systems and computing techniques for IoP
Applications of computational intelligence for data processing, modeling, positioning, and healthy habits fostering
Big Data storage and processing, management and analysis, back-end infrastructure, distributed processing
Data management and analytics: data-stream, sharing, mining etc,
Business intelligence from sensor data, social network analysis in IoP
Secure and private infrastructures for data gathering
Security and privacy in body area networks for IoP
Intelligent user-centric infrastructure for IoP
Novel application developments and case studies

Submitted articles must not have been previously published or currently submitted for journal publication elsewhere. Each submitted paper will be reviewed by at least three editorial reviewers according to the following criteria:

Significance to the journal's audience& relevance to this theme issue
Quality of the paper including: originality, technical depth, significance of results, adequacy of priori works referenced, overall organization, clarity and readability, satisfactory English, sufficient support for assertions and conclusion, appropriate title, abstract adequately summarizes the paper, introduction provides proper orientation, clear tables and figures.
