Call For Papers

The 3rd Symposium of Greek Gastronomy will be held in Karanou, Chania (Crete, Greece), July 25th-26

We invite papers on topics including, but not restricted to the following:
The relationships between Greek women, cooking and power.
Gender expectations in culinary and gastronomic matters.
Women’s voices in ancient kitchens.
Domestic cooks, kitchen maids, servants and female slaves.
Race,class and cooking from the earliest times to the latest.
Equality (?) in the kitchen.
Rituals of home cooking related to female.
Women’s home cookery as art and necessity.
Advertising of ‘feminine’ kitchen gadgets.
Women in the professional kitchens.
‘Feminine’ foods.
The role of women in changing foodways.
Cook to catch a man.
The male entrance into the kitchens.
Men, women, cooking and stereotypes.
Traditions and rituals in the kitchen.
Women’s role in the battle against shortages and hunger.
Gender and class norms in cookbooks.
Cooking literature and appropriate behavior for females.

We welcome original contributions from scholars and professionals in the fields of humanities and social sciences (such as archaeology, ethnoarchaeology, anthropology, sociology, history, crosscultural studies, education, ethics, women studies, literature, philology and so on), artists, activists, food practitioners.

Guidelines for Paper Proposals
The symposium program consists of poster and oral presentations and a visual exhibition. The title, an abstract of no more than 300 words (in English) together with a no more of 100-word biography of the speaker (in English) should be submitted by May 30, 2015 to mkavroulakis@gmail.com. In the e-mail subject please write “3rd Symposium”.
Oral presentations will be 20 minutes long.
Both graduate and postgraduate students are strongly encouraged to attend the symposium and present their work in the form of a poster. (The title, an abstract of no more than 70 words – in English- together with a bio of no more than 100 words -in English- should be submitted by May 30, 2015 to mkavroulakis@gmail.com. In the e-mail subject please write “3rd Symposium”.)

The symposium languages are Greek and English.
