Teaching and Learning Conference 2015

Exploring the Role of Servant Leadership in Higher Education

8 July 2015, London, UK
Royal National Hotel, Bedford Way, London WC1H 0DG

The annual LSBM Teaching and Learning Conference brings together established and emerging academics, practitioners and policymakers interested in teaching and learning in a widening participation context. Our 5th conference serves as an exploratory platform for sharing ideas, research and experience with professionals from across the Higher Education sector. Additionally, it offers great opportunities to extend professional networks, forge new collaborations, broaden core expertise and, most importantly, foster reflection on improving current practices of teaching and learning.

The programme of the conference will reflect the theme of Exploring the Role of Servant Leadership in Higher Education, with a focus on:
- Servant Leadership for Governance and Administration
- Emotion, Empathy and Support in Higher Education
- Empowering Learners
- Ethical Leadership and Altruistic Communities
- Learner Engagement, Collaboration and Motivation

Servant leadership is a philosophy and a set of practices that shares power, puts the needs of others first and helps people develop and perform as highly as possible. A servant leader mindset in education may help institutions compete in the new, more diverse, flexible, distributed and de-centralised higher education economy, due to its ultimate focus on the wellbeing of the alter rather than the self.

This conference aims to address the lack of research in the area of servant leadership and student engagement with respect to deeper approaches to learning and teaching. Does student’s success mesh with servant leadership principles? Does our ability to solve things together and embrace new ideas fit this leadership approach? This research offers faculty and administrators valuable feedback on how servant headship in the classroom, can impact the level a student may learn, or deeply learn, that can be utilized directly within the classroom where contact between students and teachers forms the heart of the educational process.
