Call For Papers

General Scope:

In the last years polymer photonics is witnessing a tremendous boost in research efforts and practical applications. Polymer materials can be engineered to exhibit unique optical and electrical properties. Extremely transparent and reliable optical polymers have been made commercially available for developing customer-specific photonic devices. The processing is usually fast and cost-effective. Due to its flexibility and broad compatibility, polymers can be integrated in various photonic platforms such as SOI, III-V and silica PLCs, or vice versa, photonic components made from a multitude of materials can be integrated in a heterogeneous / hybrid manner on polymer platform.

This special issue will attempt to summarize the latest achievements in polymer photonics. Emphasis will be given to the development of passive / active photonic components, including wavelength splitters, thermo-optic switches, ultrafast electro-optic modulators, and light emitting elements. The application areas may cover, but not limited to, WDM/coherent/SDM technology in telecom, short-reach optical interconnects in data centers (datacom), and biomedical sensing. The special issue will also serve to cover polymer nano-photonics, active polymers including light emitting diodes and photovoltaics, and other novel devices that may venture into new research directions.

Papers are sought which discuss the latest research in a specific area of polymer photonics. Authors are encouraged to demonstrate novel photonic devices, explain certain device physics or unique phenomena, introduce novel fabrication techniques, come up with new photonic integration concept and practice, and so on. Papers are also sought which review the state of the research progress in a broader field and project the future development directions. Broad technical areas include, but are not limited to: Polymer-based photonic devices and integration technology for telecommunication applications Polymer-waveguides and motherboard/PCB technology for datacentre optical interconnects Active polymer devices: LEDs, lasers, and photodetectors Polymer nano-photonics, polymer-metal hybrid plasmonics, and other polymer-based novel devices.
