Recent natural disasters in East and South East Asia have caused serious
impacts on economic development in the affected regions. Countless of
lessons should be learned from the previous catastrophes to anticipate
the inevitable future natural disasters. Sciences play significant roles
in anticipating, mitigating, and finding alternative solutions to
disasters. The causes of natural disaster should be understood
comprehensively through science and technology to anticipate the impacts
of similar disasters in the future.

Different from natural disasters in which the causes are unexplainable,
many calamities that affect human life today are due to the results of
environmental changes and damages. The impacts of environmental damages
have been experienced in human daily life today. Flooding, land slide,
global warming, and natural calamities in the form of tornadoes and
cyclones are now more frequently occurred. Flooding occurs when water
level is higher than the river bank or dams causes by heavy rainfall. It
can also occur because large areas of forest are cleared to make room
for settlement, road, and farmland. In addition, the rise of earth
temperature due to global warming causes the ice in the poles to melt
faster, which subsequently raises the sea level and causes flooding as
well. There are many other factors that may have caused flooding or
other natural disasters. Therefore, by understanding the causes of
natural disasters, it can help us trim down the impacts of the disasters.

ICONES 2009 is organized by Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Science,
Syiah Kuala University, Banda Aceh, Indonesia and will be held at the
Hermes Palace Hotel Banda Aceh on May 6 - 8, 2009.

The aims of this conference are to explore various disaster and
environmental issues from experiences and studies among researchers,
lecturers, environmental activists, volunteers, and experts. It is a
forum to exchange ideas, communicate and discuss research findings, and
propose possible solutions to reduce natural disaster impacts. The

Abstract and Paper Submission

Papers to be considered for presentation and for publication in the
conference proceedings must be submitted by May 6, 2009. The proceedings
will be typeset in English using MS Word and must be set on A4 paper
size with an 11-point body text. Please note that there is an 8-page
limit on the length of the paper. Authors are advised to refer to the
abstract guideline (which will be available soon) in the preparation of
their manuscripts. Participants who are only interested to present talks
are requested to submit their abstracts as early as possible latest by
February 27, 2009. A booklet of abstracts will be made available during
the conference. Abstracts and full papers should be submitted via
