Springer Personal and Ubiquitous Computing Journal Theme Issue
Topic: Ubiquitous Computing for Improved Clinical Practice
Guest Editors:
Ellen A. A. Jaatun, MD, Department of Otorhinolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery, St. Olavs University Hospital / European Palliative Care Research Centre, Faculty of Medicine, Norwegian University of Science and Technology, Trondheim, Norway

Wendy MacCaull, PhD, Professor, Department of Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science, St. Francis Xavier University, Antigonish, Canada

Development of numerous web-based and mobile technologies and other computer programs supporting patients and health care workers has occurred, including apps for voice and image recognition, patient sensors, computer programs to enhance efficiency and cost effectiveness, tools for treatment, etc.  Effective use of the information from different devices and in different settings has great potential to improve the efficiency and efficacy of care; however, this requires collaboration among numerous stakeholders, including clinical and technological experts.  Currently there is a major drive for further development of tools but there is less focus on integrating existing tools with clinical practice. The main goal for this special issue is to explore the link between clinical work processes and ubiquitous computing, focusing on context of use that has potential to improve current practice.  Ubiquitous computing can therefore work as a driving force for clinical improvement. For this special issue, topics of interest include, but are not limited to:
• Ambient Intelligence and Smart Homes in Healthcare
• Intelligent Service Systems in Healthcare
• Context Aware Applications for Patient Monitoring in Clinical Practice
• Diagnostic and Therapeutic Technologies for Clinical Practice
• Information Management and Knowledge Processing in Healthcare Environments
• Socio-technical Aspects of Ubiquitous Computing in Healthcare
• Real-world Experiments and Case Studies from Healthcare
Submitted papers should not have been previously published nor currently under consideration for publication elsewhere. Submissions should be prepared according to the author instructions available at http://www.springer.com/computer/hci/journal/779 . Manuscipts must be submitted in the form of PDF files to the corresponding editor, Wendy MacCaull, (wmaccaul@stfx.ca), under the subject heading Special Issue. Information about the manuscript (title, full list of authors, corresponding author contact, abstract, and keywords) must be included in the submission email. Relevant best papers of ICTH 2014 (Current and Future Trends of Information and Communication Technologies for Healthcare, http://cs-conferences.acadiau.ca/icth-14/) may be invited to be revised and extended for this special issue. The ICTH 2014 papers must have at least 30-40% new material, be accompanied by a document explaining how the previous reviewers’ comments and recommendations were dealt with and will be subject to further peer review.
