Overview:

Bioelectrics has emerged as a new, exciting research field. It deals with the use of electrical stimuli and the effect of intense, pulsed electric fields on biological cells and tissue. Although the effect of electric fields on biological cells has been studied for more than 50 years, bioelectrics is a comparatively new field, which tries to encompass the manipulation of cells, tissues and organisms by electrical stimuli. As bioelectrics involves generation of electrical stimuli, delivery and effect on cellular processes and physiological responses, it makes the area of bioelectrics truly interdisciplinary research area. With the advances in pulsed power technology, involving the generation of intense, ultrashort electrical pulses, there is an opportunity to explore and utilize the effects of nanosecond electric pulses. The effects of such short pulses have been shown to reach into the cell interior, opening up new applications and allowing the use of novel pulse delivery devices such as wideband antennas. Being a comparatively new field of research, there has been many research publications in this area, however, there is a lack of a comprehensive text that deals with the basics of this field and the ongoing research. Although research papers are the medium of communicating our research findings to the research community, books provide a wider audience and more comprehensive coverage. So the idea of editing a book in the field of Bioelectrics was perceived that includes general introduction to bioelectrics and coverage of different research topics in the area including pulsed power technology, modeling of tissues and cells in electric fields, development of devices and electrodes for delivery, antennas, and applications like cancer therapy, tissue ablation, wound healing, medical imaging, food decontamination etc. through different research groups or contributing authors.

The objective of this book is to provide (a medium for researchers and practitioners to present) state-of-the-art of research results and trends related to bioelectrics and pulsed power technology.

Tentative Topics of interest (but are not limited to):

- Overview of Bioelectrics
- Biological Effects of Ultrashort Electrical Pulses
- Modeling of Electric Fields in Biological Cell and Membranes
- Ultrashort Pulsed electric field generation
- Development of devices and electrodes for delivery
- Concepts and devices in the field of pulsed power technology
- UWB antennas for delivery of pulsed power
- Gene therapy
- Applications:
- Cancer therapy
- Tissue ablation
- Wound healing
- Medical imaging
- Food decontamination
- Other Research and Development topics
