Call For Papers

We invite high-quality chapter proposals for an edited book on

Managing trade-offs in adaptable software architectures

A book to be published by Elsevier and edited by:

Ivan Mistrík, Independent Consultant, Germany
Nour Ali, University of Brighton, United Kingdom
John Grundy, Swinburne University of Technology, Australia
Rick Kazman, University of Hawaii and Software Engineering Institute, United States of America
Bradley Schmerl, Carnegie Melon University, United States of America

Our goal in this book is to collect chapters on architecting for adaptability and, more specifically, how to manage trade-offs between functional requirements and multiple quality requirements in adaptable software architectures.
The intention of this book will is to collect state-of-the-art knowledge on:
• what does it means to architect a system for adaptability;
• software architecture for self-adaptive systems;
• what trade-offs are involved and how can one balance these;
• towards a general models of self-adaptive systems;
• a taxonomy of architectural patterns for self-adaptive systems;
• how to intertwineintertwine business goals and software quality requirements with adaptable software architectures;
• how quality attributes are exhibited by the architecture of the system;
• how to connect the quality of a software architecture to system architecture or other system considerations;
• what are the major challenges of engineering adaptive software architectures; software architecture as a design for adaptable systems;
• what basic techniques are required to achieve quality management in architecting for adaptability;
• the best ways to apply these adaptation techniques effectively in software-intensive systems such as cloud, mobile, cyber-physical, and ultra-large-scale/internet-scale systems;
• the approaches that can be employed to assess the value of total quality management in a software development process, with an emphasis on adaptable software architecture; architecture as a living entity;.
• case studies of successful (or unsuccessful but useful lessons learned) application of trade-offs in designing, developing and deploying adaptive systems.

We invite proposals for chapters that synthesize existing knowledge on
relevant background topics and application areas in managing trade-offs in adaptable software architectures. Chapters should be accessible to senior undergraduate students and graduate students with a background in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Software Architecture, Systems Engineering or related disciplines. Chapters are not expected to correspond to the description of a single research project or technique.

PROCEDURE AND IMPORTANT DATES

Please submit the chapter proposal of for your chapter (an extended abstract, a tentative ToC, key references) in PDF format

Chapters will be reviewed by 3 reviewers. The authors
participating in this publishing project will also be asked to review
chapters by other contributors.
