IEEE Computer Special Issue on
Self-Aware and Self-Expressive Computing Systems

IEEE Computer seeks submissions for a July 2015 special issue on self-aware and self-expressive computing.

Theme

Self-aware computing describes an emerging field of research into systems and applications that proactively gather and maintain information about their own internal states and environments and use this data to reason about behaviors, revise self-imposed goals, and self-adapt. Such knowledge and related activity fosters an aptitude for advanced intelligent decision making in dynamic and uncertain environments, which can support effective, autonomous, and self-adaptive behaviors in self-expressive systems.
A system’s knowledge may include information about its internal state, history, social or physical environment, goals, or even its own way of representing or reasoning about these things. Self-expression describes self-adaptive behavior that’s based on the knowledge associated with system self-awareness. Self-expressive systems allow for adaptation to their users — limiting the need for users to adapt to fixed system behaviors.
This special issue seeks to disseminate the latest methodologies and solutions within self-aware and self-expressive computing systems. Despite strong interest in such systems, most articles in this area have been scattered around different journals and conferences. To bring together the latest research results, foster discussion, identify future challenges, and promote future collaborative research and applications, this issue provides a common platform for investigation and an opportunity to highlight broader perspectives in self-aware and self-expressive computing.

Specific Topics

We solicit articles on a variety of self-aware and self-expressive computing systems–related topics that include, but are not limited to, the following:
• concepts and foundations of self-aware and self-expressive systems;
• architectures, control, instrumentation, and infrastructure for self-aware and self-expressive systems;
• algorithmic approaches to self-awareness and self-expression;
• tools for engineering self-aware and self-expressive systems;
• advanced autonomous and self-adaptive systems;
• self-awareness and self-adaptation in heterogeneous and decentralized systems;
• run-time adaptation, including dynamic reconfiguration, in hardware and software systems;
• applications and case studies using self-awareness and self-expression; and
• emergence of self-awareness and self-expression in adaptive systems.

Guide for Authors

Only technical articles describing previously unpublished, original, state-of-the-art research, and not currently under review by a conference or a journal will be considered. Articles should be understandable by a broad audience of computer science and engineering professionals, avoiding a focus on theory, mathematics, jargon, and abstract concepts. All manuscripts are subject to peer review on both technical merit and relevance to Computer's readership. Accepted papers will be professionally edited for content and style.
Full paper submission deadline: 28 November 2014

Publication date: July 2015
