Call For Papers

The journal track invites high-quality submissions that present original work in the areas of data mining and machine learning. Accepted papers will be published in the respective journal and, moreover, a presentation slot at the ECML PKDD 2015 conference will be offered to the authors. However, given the special nature of the ECML PKDD 2015 journal track, only papers that naturally lend themselves to conference talks will be considered. For instance, neither journal versions of previously published conference papers nor survey papers will be considered for the special issue. Such submissions will not be handled by the ECML PKDD 2015 guest editors, and instead might be reassigned to the regular submission tracks of the journals.

How to submit?

To submit to this track, authors have to make a journal submission to either the Springer Data Mining journal or the Springer Machine Learning journal, and indicate that the submission is for the “ECML PKDD 2015" special issue.

Authors who submit their work to the special ECML PKDD issues of the journals commit themselves to present their results at the ECML PKDD 2015 conference in case of acceptance. If you are not interested in presenting your work at ECML PKDD 2015, please do not submit to the ECML PKDD 2015 special issues of these journals.

Format

It is recommended that submitted papers do not exceed 20 pages, formatted in the Springer journal slyle (svjour3,smallcondensed). This is a soft limit, but if a submission exceeds the limit, please provide a brief justification regarding the length in the cover letter.

Important dates for the journal track

The 2014 cut-off dates for the monthly batches are 25 May, 29 Jun, 27 Jul, 31 Aug, 28 Sep
The 2014 cut-off dates for the bi-weekly batches are 19 Oct, 2 Nov, 16 Nov, 30 Nov, 14 Dec
The 2015 cut-off dates for the bi-weekly batches are 4 Jan, 18 Jan, 1 Feb, 15 Fev, 1 Mar, 15 Mar, 29 Mar, 12 Apr, 26 Apr

Note on quality threshold

The submissions will be treated as regular DAMI and MACH submissions with the same quality criteria; any paper accepted in the special issue will have to satisfy the high quality standards of the respective journal. Papers submitted to the track that are accepted for publication will be published in a special ECML PKDD 2015 issue of the DAMI or MACH journals. Neither the papers themselves nor any abstracts will be published in the regular conference proceedings.

Potential outcomes of the evaluation process

Depending on the decisions of the handling editors, multiple outcomes are possible for a paper submitted to the journal track:

“Accept” or “Accept conditional to minor revisions” in case the paper meets the journal acceptance criteria; if the final acceptance of the paper occurs before June 1st, 2015, a regular presentation slot for the paper will be allotted in the ECML PKDD 2015 program.
“Reject” or “Reject with encouragement to resubmit” in case the paper does not meet the quality criteria of the journals.
In exceptional cases, the editors may decide that the research presented in the paper is not mature enough to be acceptable for the journals, yet consider it, due to its originality and potential, a valuable asset for the ECML PKDD 2015 conference. In such cases, the authors will be invited to revise and shorten their paper and submit to the ECML PKDD 2015 regular proceedings track through a light reviewing process. Papers accepted through this process will be included in the regular ECML PKDD 2015 proceedings and receive a presentation slot. They however will not be published in the MACH or DAMI journals.

Commitment

The guest editors and the guest editorial board of the special journal issues commit themselves to keep reviewing cycles short. For the initial submission of the paper, we strive for a turnaround time of at most 8 weeks to be counted from the respective cut-off date. The total turn-around time of the paper reviewing process of course highly depends on the number and magnitude of revisions required and the promptness of the authors in handling them in the subsequent revisions. The guarantee is also connected to a soft limit of 20 pages for the journal submissions; papers exceeding this limit will not be rejected per se, but may require longer turnaround times. As such, reviewing processes of papers submitted after February 2015 have a high chance not to be completed in time to allow the paper to be included in the ECML PKDD 2015 program. Based on the authors’ preferences, these papers will either roll-over to the next ECML PKDD special edition (2016) or be treated as regular journal submissions.
