Call For Papers

The European Society for Artificial Intelligence in MEdicine (AIME), was established in 1986 with two main goals:
to foster fundamental and applied research in the application of Artificial Intelligence (AI) techniques to medical care and medical research, and
to provide a forum for reporting significant results achieved at biennial conferences.
A major activity of this society has been a series of international conferences, from Marseille (FR) in 1987 to Amsterdam (NL) in 2007, held biennially over the last 20 years.
The AIME'09 conference will be a unique opportunity to present and improve the international state of the art of AI in BioMedicine from both perspectives of theory, methodology, and application.
For this purpose, AIME'09 will include invited lectures, full and short papers, tutorials, workshops, and a doctoral consortium.
The conference will be held in Verona - Italy.
Scope

Original contributions are sought regarding the development of theory, techniques, and applications of AI in BioMedicine, including the exploitation of AI approaches to molecular medicine and biomedical informatics.
Contributions to theory may include presentation or analysis of the properties of novel AI methodologies potentially useful to solve biomedical problems.
Papers on techniques should describe the development or the extension of AI methods and their implementation, and discuss the assumptions and limitations of the proposed methods.
Application papers should describe the implementation of AI systems to solve significant medical problems, and should present sufficient information to allow evaluation of the practical benefits of the system.
Original long and short papers are sought on the development of theory, systems, and applications of AI in Medicine, including the exploitation of AI approaches to molecular medicine and biomedical informatics and to healthcare organizational aspects.
Contributions to theory may include presentation or analysis of the properties of novel AI methods potentially useful in solving medical problems.
Papers addressing theory should describe the development or the extension of AI methods and discuss the assumptions and limitations of the proposed methods and their novelty with respect to the state of the art.
Papers addressing systems should describe the requirements, design and implementation of new AI-inspired tools and systems, and discuss their applicability in the medical field.
Application papers should describe the implementation of AI systems to solve significant medical problems, and should present sufficient information to allow evaluation of the practical benefits of the system.
The scope of the conference includes the following areas:
Knowledge Acquisition and Management
Machine Learning, Knowledge Discovery and Data Mining
Biomedical Ontologies and Terminologies
Decision Support Systems
Neural Networks and Belief Networks
Reasoning under Uncertainty
Temporal and Spatial Representation and Reasoning
Case-Based Reasoning
Planning and Scheduling
Protocols and Guidelines
Information Retrieval
Natural Language Generation and Understanding
Biomedical Computer Vision, Imaging, and Signal Interpretation
Intelligent Agents
Telemedicine and Cooperative Systems
Cognitive Modelling
Healthcare Process Management
Submissions Overview

There are two categories of paper submission
Full research papers (up to 10 pages)
Short papers (up to 5 pages) that:
are short research papers
demonstrate implemented systems
describe late-breaking results (work-in-progress)
Papers should be formatted according to Springer's LNCS format (see www.springeronline.com/lncs or www.springer.de/comp/lncs/authors.html).
Authors are strongly encouraged to submit the papers electronically, following the instructions provided in the conference web page (see below).
All accepted papers will appear in the conference proceedings which will be published as part of Springer's "Lecture Notes in AI" series.
In addition, the authors of the best submissions will be invited to expand and refine their papers for possible publication in the journal Artificial Intelligence in Medicine (Elsevier).
As in previous AIME conferences, proposals for the organisation of tutorials and satellite workshops are sought regarding any of the above topic areas.
