CASCON 2014 is the 24th annual international conference hosted by the CAS Research, IBM Canada Software Laboratory. Using the motto, "Innovation that matters", this conference provides an exciting forum for exchanging ideas and experience in the ever-expanding and critical fields of software engineering and computing. The theme of this year, "Smarter Systems of Interactions", highlights the confluence of software platforms and technologies that are transforming our lives every day.

The CASCON 2014 program will include keynote presentations, technical papers, workshops, a technology showcase, and position papers. The technical papers track will feature both original research papers and experience reports in the general area of software technology and applications, but particularly addressing this year's theme. The workshops will provide sessions to discuss emerging ideas and results in research and practice. The technology showcase will feature demonstrations and poster presentations of research in progress. Position papers will share visions, highlight technology gaps, and outline emerging advances related to the conference theme. As such, CASCON 2014 will be an excellent venue for presenting original work, exchanging new ideas, sharing results and experiences, as well as for networking with over 1300 researchers and practitioners from academia, industry, and government.

Theme

"Smarter Systems of Interactions"

The confluence of technologies such as mobile platforms, social computing, cloud computing, big data, and analytics is bringing fundamental and revolutionary transformations in industry and society. The purposeful interaction, integration, and interoperation of these technologies together will create novel, high-value business capabilities, services, and solutions. This leads to exciting opportunities for the advancement of science and engineering in emerging areas like the Internet of Things, as well as possibilities for new software products and services like never before in commerce, manufacturing, education, healthcare, and government.

Research Topics

CASCON 2014 invites authors to submit original papers addressing these challenges and others in the broad area of software systems and technologies, including but not limited to the following topics:

Best Paper Awards

Two paper awards—for Best Paper and Best Student Paper—will be given to recognize the best technical contributions of the event in terms of originality, clarity, and potential impact. To be eligible for the "Best Student Paper" award, a student must have primarily authored the paper, and student(s) at the time must have done the work described; only the student author(s) receive this award.

Technical papers should be at most 15 pages long in 2-column, 10-point font format. LaTeX and Word templates can be found on the CASCON 2014 web site. CASCON 2014 will not accept submissions that have been previously published, are in press, or have been submitted elsewhere. Accepted technical papers will be included in the conference proceedings published by CASCON and included in the ACM Digital Library. Position Papers

Emerging technologies such as low-cost sensing, wireless and mobile devices, social and cloud computing platforms, and big data analytics are fundamentally transforming the information technology industry. The confluence of these technologies offers amazing opportunities for advancement, innovation, and paradigm shifts, creating new and high-impact solutions for critical, real-world problems in numerous industrial domains, such as commerce, finance, energy, and health care. We invite position papers to share visions, ideas, and insights on these advancements, highlight technology gaps, research agendas, and integrated solutions, and initiate discussion, feedback, and further collaboration.

Beginning in early August 2014, to submit a position paper, follow these instructions.

Workshops

Workshops at CASCON 2014 will provide a forum to present, discuss, and debate issues, problems, ideas, technology gaps, work-in-progress, and/or directions. The format of a workshop may include position papers, expert panels, hands-on exercises, and discussions. All submitted workshop proposals require long abstracts of 1500 words maximum, typically including the abstract, rationale, technical/research scope, organizers, workshop format, and expected outcomes. Long abstracts of accepted workshops will be included in the conference proceedings published by CASCON and and included in the ACM Digital Library.

Evaluation Criteria

Each workshop proposal will be reviewed and evaluated by the CASCON 2014 workshop committee. Acceptance will be based on an evaluation of the workshop's potential for generating useful results, the timeliness and expected interest in the topic, and the organizers' ability to lead a successful workshop.

Technology Showcase Exhibits

Additionally, the Technology Showcase at CASCON 2014 will provide an excellent opportunity to highlight your research results and generate interest in upcoming product and product areas aligned with the CAS Research Technology and Capability Themes, and Integrated Solutions. Exhibits on emerging technologies not explicitly listed as a CAS Research Technology Theme are also encouraged. The format of an exhibit may be a demonstration and/or poster presentation. A booth and signage are provided at no cost to the exhibitors. If hardware is required for the demonstrations, exhibitors are responsible for bringing the necessary equipment, i.e., machines, laptops, monitors, power cables, and security locks. Each demonstration booth will be set up with power and wireless internet access.

Evaluation Criteria
