Call for Papers for Volume 24 Issue 1 (June 2014)
Special Issue on Media Coverage of Elections in Asia

A free media is important for the conduct of free and fair elections. Fair and open access to information about political parties, candidates and policies allow voters to make an informed choice at the polls. However, many countries in the region, which have long serving incumbents at the political helm, have relied on media laws, control over media ownership, and associations with editors and interference in the news coverage to influence the agenda during elections.

This thematic issue, 'Media Coverage of Elections in Asia', will focus on the emerging free press environment in Asia and social media mobilizing the people to demand for political reforms. How have these momentums for change generated by the media significantly impacted on the elections in emerging democracies and post-conflict countries in the region?

APME invites media researchers, journalism educators, trainers, working journalists and those who have worked in the field to contribute research papers and commentaries to address the suggested topics below: (Contributors are welcomed to submit papers on other related topics)
• Responsible journalism and clean elections
• Social media and electoral campaign
• Accountable journalism and fair elections
• Portrayal of women / minority candidates in the media
• Training of journalists in election coverage
• Media testing the boundaries of press freedom in election coverage
• Accurate interpretation and reporting of political polling

The thematic issue will also include a featured section on the Malaysian 13th General Election held on May 8, 2013.

APME is a multi-disciplinary refereed journal, published by SAGE Publications (New Delhi) in cooperation with the University of Wollongong, New South Wales, Australia. Online access at: http://ame.sagepub.com

APME focuses on generating discussions and dialogue between media educators and practitioners. The contents range from critical media commentaries to research papers on innovative teaching and training in journalism in the Asia Pacific.
