Special Issue of Wireless Personal Communications: Cooperative Decision Making in Heterogeneous Hybrid Systems


The evolution in the field of wireless and mobile technologies, and networks has provided the framework on which a variety of devices, agents and sensors can communicate and collaborate. As a consequence, decision making in this environment of ubiquitous operation and ad hoc communication, requires the use of multiple dynamically changing parameters in order to be able to provide context awareness. A typical example is the use of environmental factors. As a result, at academic/research, even corporate level, we have witnessed several deployments of systems that observe, measure, record, decide following common principles.

Starting from the above, the purpose of this special issue is to propose novel ways to integrate different, heterogeneous systems that bring sparse information, combine this information with general rules to take decisions and enforce these decisions using automated systems.

The topics of interest include but are not limited to:
* Dynamic discovery and integration of heterogeneous devices and systems
* Integration of wireless and wired networks in a single, integrated network system
* Wireless cooperative networks architectures
* Middleware design for supporting integration and cooperation of heterogeneous systems
* Algorithms for aggregation and organization of mobile and sensor data
* Use of semantic technologies for data characterization and collaborative decision making
* Cooperative systems between software agents and devices
* Enforcement of decisions in the autonomous system (e.g. robotics)
* Integrated security and privacy protection mechanisms for cooperative decision making
