Call For Papers

CARS 2013 Call for Papers

The CARS congress is the yearly event for a renowned international community of scientists, engineers and physicians to present and discuss the key innovations that shape modern medicine on a worldwide basis.

Founded in 1985, CARS has played a leading role in medical and imaging informatics for more than 25 years by focusing on research and development on novel algorithms and systems and their applications in radiology and surgery. Its growth and impact is due to CARS’s close collaboration with the ISCAS, EuroPACS, CAR, CAD and CMI societies.

Following the long term successful cooperation, in many parts of the world, in 2013 these prestigious scientific communities will jointly hold their annual meetings as part of the 27th CARS Congress in Heidelberg, Germany.

The CARS Congress Organizing Committee invites you to come to Heidelberg in June 2013, for an extraordinary event in which scientific/medical presentations as well as stimulating discussions will foster new visions on the future of medicine.

At CARS you will have the opportunity to meet scholars and practising experts in the fields of radiology, surgery, engineering, informatics and healthcare management who have an interest in topics, such as

image- and model-guided interventions
advanced medical imaging
image processing and visualization
computer aided diagnosis
medical simulation and eLearning
surgical navigation and robotics
model-guided medicine, and
personalised medicine

New PACS applications, including IT-infrastructures adapted for the operating room, related results from the DICOM and IHE working groups, but in particular, new methods and IT-tools for modelling the patient and medical processes are increasingly shaping the scope of CARS. Clinical specialties represented at CARS include:

Imaging and Interventional Radiology
Cardiovascular and Oncologic Imaging and Interventions
Computed Maxillofacial Imaging
Computer Assisted Radiation Therapy
Computer Assisted Orthopaedic and Spinal Surgery
Computer Assisted Head and Neck, and ENT Surgery
Image Guided Neurosurgery
Minimally Invasive Cardiovascular and Thoracoabdominal Surgery

Please note that the deadline for paper and abstract submissions for CARS 2013 in Heidelberg is January 10, 2013.

Recent successful CARS congresses have taken place in Berlin, Paris, Tokyo, San Francisco, London, Chicago, Osaka, Barcelona, Geneva and Pisa.

We would be delighted to welcome you at CARS 2013, which will take place for the first time in Heidelberg, the historic university town of Germany embedding many world renowned scientific and medical institutions.

Heinz U. Lemke, PhD
CARS Organizer

-------------------------------------------------------------------

To secure a balanced evaluation of all submissions, each abstract/paper will be evaluated by three expert members of the internationally renowned medical/scientific CARS 2013 program committee.

Please submit either: a paper (3000-5000 words) or an abstract (500-1000 words) for CARS 2013.

Submissions

Extended abstracts or full papers including new methods, devices, systems and applications, clinical studies, position papers, and poster topics for presentation at the congress are solicited. Submissions will be peer-reviewed by members of the CARS international program committee.

CARS follows a two-tier system:
1) Extended abstracts of accepted lecture and poster presentations (typically containing novel work-in-progress results) will be published in the CARS 2013 Proceedings, which will be distributed to all congress participants.
2) Peer-reviewed and after thorough revision accepted full paper contributions (typically containing validated results of original R&D work) will be included in regular issues of the International Journal of CARS. Appropriate abstracts of full papers are also being included in the CARS proceedings.
Paper Submission

To submit a paper please submit your manuscript through the Editorial Management System (Springer) here and do not forget to mention "CARS 2013 Submission" to the author comments. Please refer to the instructions for authors of the International Journal of CARS and read it carefully before preparing your manuscript.

The benefit of submitting a paper rather than an abstract is that after the peer-review process, in addition to a lecture or poster presentation at the congress, the paper may also be considered for inclusion in a regular issue of the International Journal of CARS. After acceptance of presentation at the CARS congress, an extended abstract of the paper will be solicited for inclusion into the CARS Proceedings.
Abstract Submission

To submit an abstract (500-1000 words), please submit your abstract through the Abstract Management System here.

Submitting an abstract is a multi-step process. Please ensure that
1. the title is not written in capital letters, except abbreviations and proper nouns,
2. the abstract text is structured as follows: Purpose, Method, Results, Conclusion
3. Do not include references, as a “blind” refereeing process is being used.
4. Figures (1-2 max.) can be included. Please ensure that figure captions are placed exactly where the figures should be included.
5. The names of authors and their affiliations (institutions) will be entered on-line when you submit the abstract. You are also requested to provide full addresses incl. emails of all authors.

Abstracts or papers are solicited for presentation at the congress (i.e. papers as well as abstracts are considered for lectures or posters, both have equal chance of acceptance). Abstracts may also be submitted to be considered for the poster exhibition only. Abstracts for lectures or posters will also be published in the CARS Proceedings.

Presentation at CARS 2013

All submissions will be peer-reviewed and, if accepted, will be given a presentation time of 15 minutes at the CARS congress or a space in the poster exhibition.

Publication in the International Journal of CARS (IJCARS)

Paper submissions

After the peer-review process and if accepted, papers will be published in “online first” by Springer as well as printed in regular issues of the International Journal of CARS. Abstracts of papers will also be included in the CARS Proceedings which will be made available to all attendees at the congress.

Abstract submissions

CARS 2013 abstracts will be evaluated by the program committee and, if accepted, will be published in the CARS Proceedings, Supplement of the International Journal of CARS, which will be made available to all attendees at the congress.
