Call For Papers

The Faculty of Letters, University of Craiova (Romania) is pleased to announce the launch of Argotica, a yearly electronic review, with the aim of publishing articles, studies, book reviews, notes and comments on slang in general, and on European slang in particular.
An interesting register, slang lies at the junction of several disciplines, such as linguistics, lexicology, anthropology, sociology, history, thus favouring a wide range of scientific approaches. Almost permanently present in every language’s history, slang is an urban creation par excellence, an unavoidable element in music, film, literature (prose or poetry), in urban communication.
Considered from the point of view of their cryptic nature and ludic touch but also as a social signum, slang/slangs, jargon/a combination of the two illustrate the different facets of the same linguistic reality.
Slang is valued for its supreme lexical inventiveness, boundless humour, wealth of surprising constructions, in spite of its ephemeral nature caused by the people’s inexhaustible creativity afore mentioned.
To express and illustrate all the above stated we encourage original contributions for Argotica inaugural issue whose theme is “The Slang Body.”
We are welcoming articles which contain results of research work on different aspects of slang, sociolinguistic studies, or any other scientific methods/perspectives that might be of interest to the wide public.
The articles should be written in Romanian, English, French, Italian, Spanish or German. They will be accompanied by 250/300-word abstract and 4 key words written in a language different from the one of the article. A bibliography of at least 5 books is also required.
All articles will be peer-reviewed by our scientific committee. Further instructions on sending the material and norms of formatting can be found on Argotica site.
The deadline for contributions is September 30, 2012.
The review will be published on the site of the Faculty of Letters, University of Craiova in December 2012.
