IEEE Wireless Communications Special Issue on Multicell Cooperation

It is well recognized that the conventional cellular networks can no longer meet the performance requirement in terms of throughput and coverage. This is due to the significant increase of mobile users and the limited spectrum resource. It has stimulated the search for new approaches to alleviate this problem. Recently, cooperative communications has been proposed as a key technology to address this problem, which relates to either the base station (BS) or mobile station (MS) level. Multicell cooperation is a new and emerging communication paradigm promising significant system capacity targeting at intercell interference elimination. It has been shown recently that, with the aid of multicell cooperation, a significant improvement of cellular systems' performance can be achieved and the increase in throughput can be as large as an order of magnitude.

Although the advantages of multicell cooperation have been demonstrated, many problems related to the research and developing practical and effective schemes have emerged. They have attracted considerable research attentions and remain open. This special issue is intended to foster state-of-the-art research in the area of multicell cooperation. Potential topics include, but not limited to:

• Downlink and uplink PHY/MAC/Cross layer design for multicell cooperation
• Resource allocation and optimization for cooperative communications
• Cooperative or coordinated beamforming
• Multicell cooperation architecture and protocol design
• Multiuser MIMO with multicell cooperation
• Cognitive radio for multicell coopeation
• Coordinated/cooperative interference management, cancellation, and mitigation
• Theoretical performance bounds and outage probability
• Experimental testbeds and field trial results

Authors must follow the IEEE Wireless Communications Magazine guidelines for preparation of the manuscript. The SI will only consider novel, previously unpublished papers for possible publication. Prospective authors are encouraged to submit a standard IEEE Wireless Communications paper to this SI (including all text, figures, and references) through the Manuscript Central at http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/ieee-wcm.
