Call For Papers

Scope

The ICPC 2012 Student Research Symposium provides a forum for students who are currently working on their Ph.D., M.S. and undergraduate degrees, to present their work. Students at all stages of their degrees are invited to participate. Student Research Symposium track offers an opportunity to present research projects, preliminary and intermediate ideas/directions, the results obtained up-to-date, and plans towards completion of their Ph.D. degrees, M.S. or B.S. degrees. The participants of the track will be able to discuss their research plans with fellow students as well as established researchers from the ICPC community.

The main goal of the Student Research Symposium is to provide graduate and undergraduate students working in the area of program comprehension with some help and advice on conducting their research projects. Moreover, the purpose of the track is to retain interested undergraduate or M.S. students in the field and promote them to consider Ph.D. studies. The forum will also provide an opportunity for researchers in early stages of their career to meet and start building professional networks of colleagues in the area of program comprehension.

The students will receive advice from expert advisors in the field who have had rich experience in supervising and examining graduate and undergraduate students. Accepted papers will be presented at the track in front of expert panel members, all interested conference attendees and other Student Research Symposium participants. Each presentation will be followed by questions from the audience and comments/feedbacks from the panel members. In addition, there will be general discussion addressing various issues on research work and research experience in general.

Review and Evaluation Criteria

Each submission will be reviewed by at least two members of the Student Research Symposium experts panel. The submission shall only be authored by students (no principal investigator or non-student collaborator can be co-author, though s/he can be acknowledged in the paper). Also, it should include the following ingredients: (1) a statement of the technical problem addressed and its importance and relevance to program comprehension, with respect to the existing state-of-the-art; (2) the specific research hypothesis or questions; (3) a sketch of the research methodology and a proposed solution; and (4) a description of the adopted evaluation method and the result obtained so far (optional, for mature projects).

The Student Research Symposium Panel will select participants using the following four criteria: (1) the potential quality of the research and its relevance to program comprehension; (2) quality of the research abstract; (3) the stage of the research (we encourage participants both at early and late stage of their study program); (4) diversity of background, research topics and approaches.

If accepted, the student (or one of them if the paper is co-authored by a team of students) must register and attend the conference to present the paper.

Submission and Publication

Student Research Symposium papers must be submitted electronically via EasyChair and conform to the ICPC 2012 Format and Submission Guidelines. Submissions should consist of a single document up to 4 pages. Final camera ready papers will also follow the same guidelines and will be limited to 4 pages. All accepted papers will be published in the ICPC 2012 conference proceedings.
