Journal of Law, Society, and Authority (JLSA)
Special Issue — February 2027
The Normalisation of the Populist Radical Right in Europe: Political, Legal and Institutional Transformations

The Journal of Law, Society, and Authority (JLSA) invites original research contributions for a peer-reviewed special issue examining the rise and increasing normalisation of the populist radical right in Europe and its implications for European political systems, democratic institutions, law, fundamental rights, and the future of European integration.

The special issue adopts “populist radical right” as a principal analytical framework, while also welcoming engagement with related concepts such as far right, radical right, nationalist-populist, right-wing populist, Eurosceptic, and illiberal politics where analytically appropriate.

Central Question

To what extent does the rise and normalisation of the populist radical right merely reflect broader transformations within European societies, and to what extent is it actively reshaping the political, legal and institutional foundations of European democracy?

Indicative Research Areas

Contributions may address, but are not limited to:

Political Transformation and Electoral Politics — electoral dynamics, voter mobilisation, party competition, political discourse, mainstreaming and normalisation.
European Integration and EU Politics — Euroscepticism, sovereignty, EU institutions, European Parliament politics, enlargement and the future of European integration.
Democracy, Law and the Rule of Law — constitutionalism, democratic resilience and backsliding, judicial independence, separation of powers and fundamental rights.
Migration, Identity and Society — migration and asylum, citizenship, national identity, minority rights, gender and family politics, digital platforms and political communication.
European External Relations and Comparative Perspectives — foreign and security policy, EU external action, international relations, and comparative analyses across Europe.

The issue particularly welcomes comparative, interdisciplinary and cross-national contributions examining how national developments interact with broader European political, legal and institutional transformations.

Scholarly Scope

The special issue welcomes contributions from Political Science, European Studies, Law and Legal Studies, Constitutional and Administrative Law, International Relations, International Law, Sociology, Political Sociology, Security Studies, Comparative Politics, Public Policy, and related fields in the Social Sciences and Humanities.

European and non-European scholars are encouraged to contribute, particularly where submissions offer comparative, transnational or theoretically relevant perspectives.
