Invited Session
Risk and Cognition in Intelligent Systems

Topic :
The purpose of this session is to assess the situation concerning the research works using cognitive sciences to design new systems and methodological tools that can help solving problems in the domain of Risk.

Risk is a complex concept, the study of which involves social sciences, behavioural sciences, biology and engineering science. The paradox of this concept is that it is always linked to a lack of knowledge. The knowledge regarding risks is knowledge about the unknown. The term « unknown » refers both to the uncertainty of the occurrence of predictable events and the occurrence of unexpected and/or unpredictable events.

Risk can appear in various situations in the context of professional, domestic and leisure activities. Thus, we can regard risky situations as systems that involve human beings, possibly technical components and a specific environment.

In a general way, risk can be defined as the effect of uncertainty on the evolution of situations. An effect is a deviation from an expected situation - positive and/or negative.

The study and the analysis of risky situations require the understanding of human behaviours facing risk, leading us to need the help of cognitive sciences. Tools and methods proposed by cognitive sciences allow the taking into account of the different mechanisms of human behaviour such as: perception, understanding, interpretation, acceptation, adaptation, planning, and so on. It is important to stress that those mechanisms are strongly linked to the individual’s socio-cultural background.

Apart from taking into account those mechanisms at the level of the individual, it’s also necessary to understand the social dimension of human beings’ behaviours when they interact during risky situations.
This point is all the more crucial because the evolution of the activities of our modern societies, due to the globalisation of the markets and the use of new information technologies, is responsible for situations of increasing complexity that involve the cooperation and the collaboration of individuals from different cultures (social background, job, academic background, etc…) as well as the use of so called « intelligent » machines.

Considering all these factors, it has become essential to propose new conceptual systems (methods, software or material systems) to assist people in the management of risky situations.

The contributions to this session are expected to present the considered problem from a cognitive point of view, then the method used to tackle it and the resulting system.

Instructions for Authors :
Papers are invited on the session topic. The contributions should be of high quality, original and not published elsewhere or submitted for publication during the review period.
Papers must be submitted following the instructions found on the Submission of Papers page.
Papers for review must be submitted electronically in PDF form using the PROSE online submission and review system accessed from the web-site main menu.
To ensure high quality, all papers will be thoroughly reviewed by the session Programme Committee. Papers may be rejected without being sent to the reviewers if it is judged that they are not suitable for the session on the basis of content, quality or length.
All papers will be presented orally. All oral presentation must be presented by one of the authors who must register for the conference and pay the fee.
By submitting a paper you undertake that if it is accepted, you will register for the conference, pay the fee, attend the conference and present the paper.
By submitting a paper you also indicate that you accept the conference Terms and Conditions, available by request or on the conference web site, and that you agree to abide by them.

Publication :
Accepted papers will be published by prestigious publishing house, Springer Verlag, as book chapters in a volume of the KES-Springer Smart Innovations, Systems and technologies series and indexed in ISI conference publications, EI, INSPEC, etc.
Extended versions of outstanding papers will be considered for publication in the book:
«Risk and Cognition», edited by Springer Verlag.

Important Dates:

Deadline for submission intention: 15 November 2011
Submission of Papers: 15 December 2011
Notification of Acceptance: 15 January 2012
Upload of Final Publication Files: 1 February 2012
