Call For Papers | |||||||||||||||
The University of Minho is honoured to organize and host the Workshop, within the framework of the European Project “Participation”, on the topic “What is the Role Played by Regional and Local Authorities in Preventing and Countering Violent Extremism?”, which will be held on the 27th and 28th of September 2023.
We invite submissions for papers from postgraduate students on all areas of the prevention and countering of violent extremism (P/CVE) research. Submissions should include an author/presenter full name(s), email address(es), current position(s), paper title(s) and abstract (max. 500 words) by 1st of July 2023. Please submit proposals electronically to participation.uminho@gmail.com. P/CVE policies came into light in 2001 and although some countries already displayed a solid prevention framework, these policies began to be considered by many as a necessity in 2015 with the wave of attacks that struck Europe. Most countries have already had to deal with violent extremism at some point even in the form of domestic terrorism, under left and far right movements. However, it was with the increase of extremist Islamic movements that these states realized the need for a solid and consolidated preventative framework. There is increasing recognition among the international community that local officials and practitioners can play a crucial role in addressing conditions that create an enabling environment for violent extremism to thrive. A growing number of regions and cities are developing strategies and initiatives that address radicalization and violent extremism. Papers are invited for themes including but not exclusive to: Preventing and Countering Violent Extremism (P/CVE) • Violent Radicalization • National P/CVE Action Plans • Root Factors Encouraging Violent Extremism • Counter-Radicalization • Left, far right, separatist and religious extremism • Civil Society Actors • Opportunities to Engage in Violent Extremism • Social Polarization, Extremism and Radicalism • Awareness-raising Campaigns • Schools • Public Information Dissemination • Community Debate Campaigns • Inter-religious Dialogue • Capacity Building of Teachers and Community • Increasing Public Trust in Police • Drivers for Involvement in Violent Extremism • Deradicalization or Exit Programs • Legal and Judicial Tools. All proposals should include (where applicable): Author/presenter full name(s); Email address(es); Current position(s); Paper title(s); Abstract (max. 500 words). Important deadlines: Proposal submission: by 1st of July 2023; Notification of acceptance: 7th of July 2023; Full paper submission: 1st of September 2023; Final programme: 15th of September 2023.
