Call for Papers - Research Track
The Brazilian Symposium on Software Engineering (SBES), annually promoted by the Brazilian Computer Society (SBC), is the premier Software Engineering conference in Latin America. SBES is held in conjunction with the Brazilian Conference on Software: Theory and Practice (CBSoft). In 2023, the main theme of SBES is "Responsible Software Engineering". The SBES Research Track is the main track of the symposium and publishes solid, well-evaluated contributions regarding originality, presentation quality, and relevance for the Software Engineering area. The symposium proceedings will be published in a digital library to be announced.

Open Science Policies
The SBES 2023 Research Track encourages authors to adopt Open Science principles, through the availability of research artifacts (for example, collected data and source code), aiming at promoting transparency, replicability and reproducibility in research. Authors must provide an explicit statement about data availability (or lack thereof) in the submitted paper in an unnumbered section named "Artefact Availability" following the "Conclusion" section, indicating the place the research artifacts are deposited or providing a justification for their non-availability. It is noteworthy that the availability of artifacts is not mandatory and will not be used as a criterion for paper acceptance or rejection.
The document “SBES 2023 - Open Science Policies” presents Open Science principles and practices to support authors of the SBES Research Track. In case of questions, please approach the Open Science Chair via e-mail at any time. Contacting the Open Science Chair does not violate the doubly-anonymous submissions.
Paper Preparation and Submission
Authors should submit original work that has neither appeared elsewhere for publication, nor which is under review for another refereed publication. Papers can be submitted in Portuguese or English. Submissions in English are strongly encouraged since the symposium proceedings will be indexed in a digital library. Papers written in Portuguese must include an abstract in English.
All submissions must be in Adobe Portable Document Format (PDF) and must comply with the ACM 2-column conference format (ACM_SigConf) available at this link https://www.acm.org/publications/proceedings-template. LaTeX users must use the acmart.cls class provided in the template with the conference format enabled at the document preamble:
\documentclass[sigconf]{acmart}
Authors must use the ACM-Reference-Format.bst bibliography style also provided in the template:
\bibliographystyle{ACM-Reference-Format}
Below the Conclusion section, authors must include an unnumbered section named "Artefact Availability":
\section*{Artefact Availability}
Submissions must be no longer than 10 pages, including all figures, tables, appendixes, references and acknowledgement. Papers should be electronically submitted through JEMS (https://jems.sbc.org.br/home.cgi?c=4264):
Abstract submission: The paper title, authors, abstract, associated topic(s), and the language of the paper must be informed; and
Full paper submission: The file in PDF format containing the paper must be submitted.
The publication of Research Track accepted papers implies that at least one of its authors will register at CBSoft 2023 and will present the paper during SBES 2023.
Double-Blind
The SBES 2023 Research Track will follow a double-blind review process. All submitted papers should conceal the identity of the authors. Both author names and affiliations must be omitted. In addition, the following rules should be addressed:
Citations to own related work must be written in the third person. For example, one must write "the previous work of Silva et al." as opposed to "our previous work." Terms that can identify the authors, for instance, "we", "our", "ours", "github", and "funding", must be avoided and should be removed prior to submitting.
Papers should not mention any artifact in repositories or websites that can identify the authorship. If any artifact needs to be made available, it should be anonymized in the repository/website. For using GitHub, we recommend the "anonymous" service (https://anonymous.4open.science);
If the submitted paper is a follow-up of a previous work, the reference may be anonymized in the submitted paper. For example, "the previous work of Silva et al." can be adapted to "based on the previous work [X]" and the reference at the end of the paper can be presented as "[X] Anonymous authors. Not presented due to double-blind review.";
Reviewers will not be encouraged to look for references in other sources on the Internet that identify the authors. Searches in digital libraries or existing artifacts do not break the double-blind policy.
After paper acceptance, all the paper information (without anonymization) can be included in the camera-ready version. Any questions about paper preparation following the double-blind rules can be sent to the Program Committee Chairs.
Any questions about paper preparation following the double-blind rules can be sent to the Program Committee Chairs.
Desk Rejection
Submissions that are out of the scope of the symposium, or not in compliance with the required submission format and anonymization rules, will be rejected without review.
Paper Review
Papers in this track will be reviewed by at least three Program Committee members, based on technical and methodological soundness (the extent to which the paper's contributions address its research questions and are supported by appropriate research methods), relevance (the extent to which the paper's contributions can impact the field of software engineering), originality (the extent to which the contributions are sufficiently novel with respect to the state-of-the-art), and presentation (paper's quality of writing, including clear descriptions, adequate use of the Portuguese or English language, absence of major ambiguity, clearly readable figures and tables, and adherence to the SBES formatting instructions). Reviewers may also comment on research transparency based on the availability of open artifacts.
If a previous publication of the paper or simultaneous submission for a refereed forum (event or journal) is reported, the paper will be rejected and authors may be prevented from submitting papers in future SBES editions.
Authors' Response (Rebuttal)
During the review process, a rebuttal may be requested. In this case, authors will have access to reviews and may argue and answer questions from the reviewers before the final acceptance/rejection decision. The rebuttal is limited to a plain text up to 5,000 characters (including spaces). In case of questions, please approach the Program Committee Co-Chairs via e-mail at any time.
Best Paper Award
The SBES Steering Committee will appoint a committee to award the best papers of SBES Research Track. Awarded papers will be announced during the CBSoft. The five best papers will be invited to submit an extended version in English to the Journal of Software Engineering Research and Development (JSERD).
Outstanding Reviewer Award
The SBES Research Track acknowledges the generosity of the Program Committee members who give their time and best effort to review submitted papers. The progress of scientific growth depends on dedicated colleagues, who aim to further the development of technology by offering their attention and passion when reviewing the papers.
A certificate of Outstanding Reviewer will be awarded to the five best reviewers. The selection will be based on the adherence of the reviews to the SBES review criteria, the quality and usefulness of reviews, as well as active participation during Program Committee discussion.
