Call for Papers: International Studies (Winter 2022, 22/2)

Dear colleagues,

International Studies now cordially invites articles for its Winter 2022 issue. In addition to papers within the broader thematic scope of the journal, the Winter 2022 issue includes a special thematic interest in the topic “International Relations after 2022”.

International Studies is a double-blind peer-reviewed scholarly journal published by Libertas International University (Zagreb, Croatia). The journal welcomes submissions within its thematic scope that includes international relations, foreign policy, international economics, and related fields such as the social sciences, humanities, political science, economics, history, philosophy, etc. The journal approaches international relations in a broader sense and encourages an interdisciplinary approach.
Articles are accepted and published in either English or Croatian. The journal is published biannually in Platinum Open Access and does not charge any article submission or processing fees. International Studies is indexed in over 20 scholarly databases and services, including CEEOL, DOAJ, EBSCOhost, ERIH PLUS, ProQuest, and RePEc. Book reviews are also welcome.

The world has gone through a series of fundamental changes in the last six years, with various crucial aspects of international relations challenged or reversed. In 2016, the ever-widening and ever-deepening nature of the EU was challenged with the Brexit vote victorious in the UK. Globalization and the hegemonic position of the US at its center was challenged in several ways: with the electoral victory of Donald Trump on a protectionist ticket in 2016, with various challenges to the US relationship with key international organizations including the UN, NATO and the WTO; with a partial reversal of trade liberalization including a tariff war with China with its apex in 2018/19. The COVID-19 crisis of 2020 redefined the relationship between private and public sectors and included levels of interventionism unseen in several generations. It also caused enormous supply-side shocks, and indirectly helped cause severe inflation episodes in the developed world, the results of which are not yet fully visible. In early 2022, the Russia-Ukraine conflict expanded to levels not seen in Europe since the post-Yugoslav wars in the early 1990s (and before that, since World War 2). The economic fall-out has increased the danger of inflation in the developed world and threatens to cause famine in the developing world. The political fall-out is still uncertain but will alter the position of a number of states in the international order. These developments are intertwined and open a series of urgent questions.

Questions within the special thematic interest “International Relations after 2022” include, but are not limited to:

- The economic globalization agenda: Damage to the idea of free trade?
- Hegemonic shift: Changes to positions of the US and China
- Russia after 2022: An empire reborn?
- Quo Vadis, EU?: The capacities to survive, expand, deepen the integration and/or formulate a foreign policy
- Future evolution of international organizations: the futures of NATO, UN, WHO, WTO
- Russia, China, Turkey, EU and the US in the Balkans - interplay of the changing agendas in a contested space

The article submission deadline is 20 September 2022. Articles should be sent to the journal’s Editor-in-Chief, dr. Vladimir Filipović, at vfilipovic@libertas.hr. Please consult the Instructions for authors before submitting your contributions.
