About this Research Topic

Traditional healthcare systems cannot address everyone's needs due to enormous rise in the population. Hence, one of the goals of digital healthcare is to assist consumers by providing timely information about their health and medical conditions. Smart healthcare assists in the remote monitoring of patients as well as the reduction of treatment costs for the consumer. It focuses on improving the user's quality of life and experience. Thus, a successful smart healthcare system ensures that its residents live a healthy lifestyle. In the sixth-generation, mobile communication technology and digital medicine application scenarios, such as remote consultation, operation guidance, first-aid vehicles, and wearable medical equipment will become more common. On-body sensors and stationary medical devices are two types of medical equipment used to conduct smart healthcare in the medical industry and the application of Internet-of-Things (IoT) technology can help hospitals achieve intelligent medical treatment and management. In the near future, several smart healthcare applications are expected to be released. Along with benefits, important challenges come in terms of quality, usability and adaptability, transparency and data protection.

In this Research Topic, we would like to offer a platform for the researchers who want to facilitate multidisciplinary research revolving around the applications and challenges of the Internet-of-things in digital healthcare systems.

The themes of interest within the scope of this research topic are three-fold:

(i) Compiling the most recent developments in healthcare systems, IoT-based remote monitoring applications, and system architecture.

(ii) Reporting the use of low-cost and low-complexity IoT devices, as well as sophisticated use of smart healthcare systems.

(iii) Recording the advancements in smart healthcare that incorporates machine learning, cloud computing, and artificial intelligence.

We welcome original research studies, and systematic and scoping reviews to explore technological innovations and research studies that relate to these above topics.

Keywords: The Internet of Medical Things (IoMT), Internet of Health Things (IoHT), Human Bond Communications (HBC), Internet of Body (IoB), Wireless body area network, Healthcare signal processing, Machine learning

Important Note: All contributions to this Research Topic must be within the scope of the section and journal to which they are submitted, as defined in their mission statements. Frontiers reserves the right to guide an out-of-scope manuscript to a more suitable section or journal at any stage of peer review.
