Aims and Scope

The ability to describe data by means of linguistic expressions is characteristic of human beings, in contrast with numerical data models typically employed by computers. In order to improve the communication between humans and computers, it is necessary to provide knowledge representation models, mathematical tools and optimization procedures able to capture and model the semantics of linguistic expressions, and learn the association between linguistic summaries of data and human intuitions. This is a fundamental basis for the development of intelligent systems able to generate linguistic description of, and to offer linguistic interaction with, data. Linguistic summarization of data is particularly useful for applications in which there is a necessity of understanding data, like supervision, decision making, human-computer interaction, etc.

The objective of the special session is to provide a forum for the presentation and discussion of the most recent developments in the topic of linguistic data summarization (LDS).

Topics

Topics of interest include, but are not restricted to:

- Modeling the semantics of linguistic terms employed in data summarization

- Machine Learning applied to data summarization

- Ontologies for data summarization

- Decision making, decision support or recommendation systems based on linguistic summarization of data

- Natural language generation of data summaries

- Natural language generation for the description of uncertain data

- Linguistic human-machine interaction for data access and description

- Linguistic summarization of time series

- Linguistic information extraction from visual information

- Fields of application of LDS. Applications based on LDS

- Empirical, psychological and social sciences studies involving linguistic summarization of data

- Prototypes or demonstrations in any of the above indicated fields

Position and review papers on the role that LDS currently play or will play in the future either from a modeling and/or an applications point of view are also welcome.
